Quick Bibliography SeriesBibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the National
 Agricultural
 Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are not
 indepth
exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject. However, the
 citations are a
substantial resource for recent investigations on a given topic.
 They also serve
the purpose of bringing the literature of agriculture to the
 interested user who,
in many cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-line
 searches of the
AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic and evidence of extensive
 interest are
 the selection criteria.

The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
 strategy of the
 Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.

Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
 construed as
 endorsement or disapproval.

Abstract: Agricultural science is a complex and multidisciplinary
 field that
represents the vital link between human (socioeconomic) systems and
 the natural
environment. Development of effective strategies for efficient farm
 resource
allocation and management requires a general understanding of the
 fundamental
components of farming systems and their interactions, and properly
 begins with the
analysis of farm manager goals and limitations. This article
 defines important
systems concepts and discusses the role of systems theory in
 agricultural research
and problem solving. In addition, several agricultural systems
 examples are
described and a systems method is used to identify and discuss the
 components and
general goals of agricultural systems. We believe to the extent
 that it is
utilized, systems theory provides a powerful toot to assist those
 involved in
agricultural research, education, and production in understanding
 complex
interactions among system components and component technologies,
 and in
identifying and prioritizing information or research needs.

Abstract: Extract: A farming system is defined as a human group
 and the resources
and environment that it manages in producing plant and/or animal
 products to meet
its direct or perceived needs for sustenance and quality of life.
 Farming Systems
Research may be defined as a systematic analysis of farming
 systems, including
their similarities and dissimilarities. The purpose of farming
 systems research
is to study farms with similar and/or different environments, crops
 and/or animals
and production practices to see how they meet demands for perceived
 human needs
 and quality of life.

Abstract: Extract: This paper attempts to define and discuss
 Farming Systems
Research (FSR) in a somewhat narrow sense as to how the MSU Task
 Force may be able
to progress in a meaningful and practical manner. In the arena of
 agriculture and
food production, in which Title XII is involved, there are basic
 requirements for
professionals from four disciplines; (1) biology (2) physical
 technology, (3)
economics and (4) sociology. The FSR approach is focused towards
 the farm family
 and the family farmer.

Abstract: Extract: In this paper, we discuss Farming Systems
 Research which has
the following characteristics: (a) It aims to generate technology
 to increase
resource productivity for an identified group of farmers,
 especially in the short
term. (b) It is conceptually based on a farming systems
 perspective. (c) It uses
on-farm research methods. Taking the viewpoint of national
 agricultural research
programs, we argue that this specific subset of research activities
 should receive
priority in efforts to improve the effectiveness of agricultural
 research.

Abstract: Extract: The farming systems research approach is
 consistent with
current notions of rural and economic development as articulated in
 equitability,
local participation, and employment generation. As yet, however,
 perhaps mainly
because it is largely in the developmental stage, the farming
 systems research
process has not been firmly established as an efficient way to
 improve the
livelihood of the majority of small farmers. I believe that the
 future in theLDCs
is now more promising than previously, in that we in the high
 income countries are
at least shedding some of our cultural arrogance. To paraphrase the
 words of a
wise Islamic scholar, Alhaji Junaidu, sound development must build
 upon rather
than destroy the farmers' traditional techniques.

Abstract: A technical report discusses some of the
 nutrition-related problems
that occur when new technologies are introduced into traditional
 agriculture
systems, and suggests ways in which the impact of these new
 technologies on the
nutritional status of the farm family might be assessed.
 Information in 2 specific
areas is reviewed, viz.: (1) the impact of changing agricultural
 systems on
traditional farm households concerning the enhancement of food
 production for
meeting increased food consumption needs on the traditional farm
 household; and
 (2) research findings concerning indicators of nutritional change
 used in farming
systems research, and the argument that such indicators must be
 simple an easy to
interpret. It is stressed that nutrition concerns of farming
 systems research
should focus on family food supply and intra-household food
 distribution.

Abstract: Extract: Farming systems research can be defined as the
 application of
the systematic approach to the study of whatever is defined as a
 farm. The
purposes of such research may vary from the attempt to understand
 such a system
to a programmatic attempt to make changes within certain aspects of
 such a system.

Abstract: Extract: Farming systems research (FSR), in its broadest
 sense,
involves the application of the systems perspective to the study of
 a farm. The
purposes of such research could vary from a broad understanding of
 system
functions to understanding a narrow subset of particular
 interactions. Thus, it
encompasses any research concerned with a farming subsystem or the
 whole farm
 system.

Abstract: An overview paper examines ways in which increasing
 farming systems
research interests might contribute to resolving nutritional
 problems,
particularly in rural areas. A set of research procedures, known as
 on-farm
research (OFR), that derive from a concern about the effectiveness
 of traditional
agricultural research and development are presented. Emphasis is
 placed on
conceptual issues in OFR of common interest to nutrition and
 agriculture;
procedural implications; and possible courses of action by national
 agricultural
 research and nutrition institutions. (wz)

Abstract: Extract: While the role of technical change in
 agriculture is seen
differently by protagonists of different theories of development,
 the processes
of technology generation and uptake are widely seen as progressive.
 In this vein,
agricultural technology assessment is seen as contributing to
 research policy and
management and also to the formulation, monitoring and evaluation
 of broader rural
development policies and programs. A need for both farm-level and
 aggregate-level
assessents is identified, and methods applied at each level are
 reviewed. At the
farm level, some insights are provided by the farming systems
 research approach
leading to recognition of a changed role for economists in
 farm-level impact
assessment. At the aggregate level, the problems of tracing out all
 the important
consequences of a technical innovation can be severe. Analysts will
 generally need
to account for general equilibrium effects, distorted prices and
 welfare
considerations, as well as the dynamic interaction between
 technology and
institutions. In the light of the discussion, an agenda of
 unfinished business for
 agricultural economists is suggested.

Abstract: Extract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate
 that research
tools that concentrate on productivity and ignore stability and
 sustainability do
not serve the needs of small farmers. Field results from Northern
 Thailand are
used to document the necessity to consider long-term as well as
 short-term
 economic and environmental impacts.
