Quick Bibliography SeriesBibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the National
Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are not
indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject. However,
the citations are a substantial resource for recent investigations
on a given topic. They also serve the purpose of bringing the
literature of agriculture to the interested user who, in many
cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-line
searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic and
evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria.
The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.
Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
construed as endorsement or disapproval.
To request a copy of a bibliography in this series, send the series

Abstract: Extract: Comparisons between women and male and
joint male/female farmland ownership are assessed for the
United States in 1946 and 1978. Findings indicate that women's
share of farmland, measured in terms of average acreage and percent
of total U.S. farmland, has increased somewhat over 30 years
despite the disproportionately large share retained by male and
joint male/female owners in both time periods. This advance is not
reflected in the per acre value comparisons
between women and other owners, however. Tenure and mode of
acquisition of the farmland differ with gender, probably due to the
late age at which most women acquire land; women
agricultural landowners are more apt to be landlords than
owner operators or part-owner operators. The need for expanded
research on women as owners of farmland is clarified.

Abstract: Extract: Data from 358 households in 12 sites
representative of climatic, geographical, and agricultural
variations in the eastern communal areas of Botswana show that
differences in the agricultural practices and extension
contact of male- and female-headed households largely
disappear when economic stratum is controlled. Female-headed
households are shown not to be a homogeneous group. There
appear to be greater similarities between farmers within the same
economic stratum regardless of gender than between
farmers of the same gender in different strata.

Abstract: Previous research on the effects of urbanization on
farming and farm families has focused on the consequences of urban
expansion on farming practice rather than on the well-being of farm
families. Proximity to urban areas has been
found to alter the way farm families utilize the nonfarm labor
market. in this study, the-off-farm earnings of husbands and wives
in farm families are compared across metropolitan
(metro) and nonmetropolitan (nonmetro) areas using data from the
March supplement to the 1989 Current Population Survey. Censored
regression models (tobit) and decomposition are used to demonstrate
the effects of nonfarm labor market differences on off-farm labor
force participation and earnings. The
analysis reveals that farm family members, as expected, have
significantly higher rates of participation and earnings in
metropolitan areas. But this analysis also reveals that
increases in off-farm participation are likely to have a
larger effect on total off-farm earnings in nonmetropolitan areas
than returns to those already working off-farm. The
potential for increases in off-farm earnings will be
underestimated in nonmetro areas when changes in participation in
the off-farm labor market are not taken into account.

Abstract: Off-farm employment decisions of farm couples are
analyzed with 1985 data from the S-191 regional research
project. The employment of one farm spouse is positively
related to the off-farm employment of the other spouse. Wives' off-
farm employment is most closely related to their personal
characteristics, whereas husbands' decisions are best
predicted by a combination of farm, family, and personal
characteristics. These results were consistent regardless of
whether husbands and wives were studied separately or jointly with
canonical discriminant function analyses. Part-time farms are more
likely to have the wife employed off the farm,
thereby making the husband responsible for the daily operation of
the farm. Wives on part-time farms seem to substitute on the farm
for their employed husbands, but husbands do not
substitute as well for their employed wives. Wives simply add to
their responsibilities rather than shifting them to others in the
farm family.

Abstract: The decisions of farm wives to work off the farm and the
earnings they make in that off-farm employment should be considered
simultaneously. Previous studies of wives' off-farm earnings have
included only employed wives in their
analyses of the factors affecting earnings, which results in biased
estimates. This study tests, via Tobit analysis, a
model which includes all farm wives and examines the effects of
wives' human capital, farm and family constraints, and
labor market characteristics on both their off-farm employment
decisions and their earnings. Wives' off-farm earnings are
found to be related to wives' education, labor market
experience, presence of children, other family income, farm size,
and debt/income ratio. Changes in these factors have a greater
influence on the labor market participation decisions of farm wives
than on the variation in their earnings, once employed.

Abstract: Farm wives' preferences for use of time in
household and farm tasks, their actual time in these tasks, and
their external employment status were investigated with a sample of
farm wives from seven states. Most wives preferred to spend about
the same amount of time they were actually
spending in each of the 17 tasks. Not all who had other
preferences desired to decrease their time in such tasks; many farm
wives preferred to spend more time in tasks such as house care,
household management, and gardening. Wives' off-farm
employment status was significantly related to their feelings about
time in selected household and farm tasks. Generally, higher
proportions of employed wives wanted to increase their time in meal
preparation; house care; yard, car, and pet care; clothing care and
construction; field work; caring for
livestock; and running farm errands. The actual amount of time
women spent at these tasks and their hours of employment time were
only sporadically related to their feelings about their use of
time.

Abstract: Extract: A 10 percent stratified random sample
survey of migrant Hispanic farm women was conducted in 1978 in
Wisconsin by bilingual interviewers. Interviews with the women
revealed that they have greater numbers of children than other
women in the United States. They bear children at younger
ages, have greater infant mortality, and use fewer
contraceptive techniques. We hypothesize that their fertility
behavior is related to age, level of education, and degree of
assimilation, the latter measured by bilingualism. Results
show that the variable most strongly associated with live
births is age; when it is controlled, education is the main
predictor. When the effects of both age and education are
controlled, bilingual capacity also contributes to explaining
births. Education, on the other hand, explains most of the
variance in expected number of children. We conclude that high
fertility patterns are likely to continue among migrant farm women
until level of education improves for the children, thus increasing
their bilingual capacity and improving their
occupational opportunities.

Abstract: The paper focuses upon the impact of changing
relations between farmers and spouses in the context of the
restructuring of the rural economy and increasing female
participation in labour markets. It is based upon a study of the
connections between the succession process in agriculture and
family relationships [Blanc, M. and Perrier-Cornet, P.
(1989) Renouvellement des forces de travail et formes de
production familiales en agriculture (les installations
d'agriculteurs au cours de la decennie soixante-dix).
Montpellier, INRA, Departement d'Economie et de Sociologie
Rurales, Montpellier]. It argues that for farmer's wives, off-farm
work, participation in other farm-based enterprises and
occupational status result from a negotiation of power
relations within the farm operating couple. Such changes are
bringing about a distinct form of pluriactivity among farm
families, with an emerging trend towards husbands being
occupied full-time on-farm and wives off-farm. The paper deals with
the future of family farming in connection with these
changes. The role played by the ideology of family farming in
sustaining these emerging forms of production is examined. The
individuation of aspirations, especially for women, is
considered an important factor in terms of labour market
involvement. However, it is argued that the resolution of the
impact of such changes on the domestic sphere and the farm is
dependent upon a process of negotiation between the farmer and
spouse.

Abstract: Extract: Farm women are involved in their family's
farming operations through labor participation and make an
economic contribution to both the farm unit and the family
unit. Although the major responsibility of the women is caring for
the home and children, her farmwork is supportive of the farm unit
since she is occasionally involved in almost half the farm tasks.
Results from all the studies of task
participation of farm women indicate that those women need
specialized instruction and information to improve the quality of
farm life.

Abstract: Literature bearing on the relationship of women's
employment status to couples' marital adjustment is reviewed. Three
competing hypotheses--status competition, status
enhancement, and no effects--are discussed in terms of farm
couples' current context. Findings from this study of 527 farm
couples suggest that at this time, women's off-farm employment
might be in competition with traditional farm values, and thus
might hinder high-quality marital relationships in farm
couples. Additional determinants of marital adjustment in farm
couples are discussed.

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the paid labor force
participation rates and continuity patterns of rural farm,
rural nonfarm, and urban women. Specifically, we trace the
labor force participation of a panel of approximately 800
women in Nebraska from 1977 to 1985. This paper has a twofold
purpose. First, we examine changes in the work status of the cohort
of Nebraska women during the farm crisis years. Second, we identify
individual factors influencing labor force
participation and continuity, contrasting all three
residential groups of women. A loglinear model isolates
differences in participation rates for rural and urban women as
well as for rural farm and rural nonfarm women during the 1977,
1981, and 1985 panel years. A discriminant analysis then ascertains
the nonlinear relationships in women's work
histories for the same time period. A comparison of
continuous, discontinuous, and nonparticipatory labor force
patterns illustrates that rural women, and farm women in
particular, entered the wage labor force in disproportionate
numbers during the farm crisis years. The farm crisis provides a
framework for discussing accelerated participation rates and
changes in the effects of individual human capital
characteristics. Increases in participation rates are most
evident among married farm women with dicontinuous part-time work
histories. Over the three data points, the effect of
preschool children on labor work force participation was
attenuated for farm women and higher education levels became less
salient in predicting labor force participation rates for both
rural and urban women.

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to explore the
multiplicity of farm women's roles and to determine whether a
particular role complex is related to lifestyle satisfaction.
Questionnaires were mailed to randomly selected farm families in
seven states. Responses from 1,235 wives revealed that 13%
functioned in five roles, 37% in four roles, 42% in three
roles, and 8% in two roles. Wives from small farms were more likely
to carry five role responsibilities. Education was
positively related to number of roles, while age was
negatively related. Although farm size, wives' off-farm
income, and length of marriage were significantly related to number
of roles, the relationships were not linear. Number of roles
negatively affected lifestyle satisfaction but not
marital happiness. Lifestyle satisfaction was decreased by
having an off-farm-work role and a parenting role, but not by a
farm-work role. The number of roles was also related to both equity
satisfaction and financial security. Younger wives,
those with more education, and those from smaller farms are more
likely to carry a quintet of roles. In conclusion, it
appears that role load of farm wives reduces lifestyle
satisfaction. Working off the farm reduces lifestyle
satisfaction, but working on the farm does not. However, being a
parent reduced lifestyle satisfaction, regardless of the
type of or number of work roles of the wife. Marital happiness
remains independent of all variables in this study.

Abstract: Through the use of a longitudinal data set, we
determine those factors that are important to off-farm labor market
entry and compare them with factors affecting off-farm labor market
exiting. The model of labor market entry and exit takes into
account the effects of changes in key economic
variables over a four-year period. The data are for married farm
women in Wisconsin who must make labor allocation
decisions among home production, farm production, and off-farm
employment. These decisions have important implications for the
well-being of the families involved (who have been
increasing in number) and for their communities.

Abstract: Compared to their urban counterparts, the rural
poor are more likely to be employed, more apt to be members of
married-couple families, less likely to be children, less
likely to be minority, and more likely to have assets but a
negative income. This paper examines poverty rates and factors that
affect mobility in and out of poverty among major
categories of the rural poor. Particular attention is paid to farm
workers and the rural farm population in the South. It endeavors to
identify both structural conditions that
perpetuate rural poverty and government interventions that
ameliorate human suffering and break the cycle of poverty
reproduction.

satisfaction and dyadic adjustment as well as perceptions of stress
and coping strategies utilized. Although 96 percent of the women
identified themselves as farmers, 38 percent were employed off the
farm. In general, the farm couples reported high satisfaction with
