 Quick Bibliography Series
Bibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the
National Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are
not indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject.
However, the citations are a substantial resource for recent
investigations on a given topic. They also serve the purpose
of bringing the literature of agriculture to the interested
user who, in many cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-
line searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic
and evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria.

The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.

Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
 construed as endorsement or disapproval.

Abstract: A large vertical-axis wind turbine which
incorporates the latest technology from field experiments,
wind tunnel models, and computer code simulations was erected
at Bushland, TX. Testing began in 1988. The wind turbine was
designed and built to examine aerodynamic, control, and
structural dynamic strategies intended to improve the
effectiveness of vertical-axis wind turbine systems. The
turbine has a 34-m equatorial rotor diameter and is 50 m high.
The rotor blades are each constituted in five sections with
two different airfoil shapes and three sizes. Power from the
rotor is transferred through a speed increasing transmission
to a variable speed generator rated at 500 kW in a 12.5 m/s
wind operating at 37.5 rpm. Results from aerodynamic testing
indicate the turbine's performance is slightly less than
predicted but is much better than previous designs. Power per
square meter of rotor area was measured at 40% greater than
earlier systems. Using a Rayleigh windspeed distribution and
an annual windspeed average of 6.3 m/s, the annual energy from
the new wind turbine is projected to be 50% more per square
meter of rotor area than the systems now used in wind farms.
The structural measurements show that the measured gravity and
centrifugal stresses were within 2% of the stresses predicted
by the finite element model. Also the predicted modal
frequencies for the first 11 modes were within 2% of the
 measured values.

Abstract: The field voltage of a wind-driven alternator or
generator is automatically controlled in response to the
output voltage developed in the load with the objective of
always maintaining the maximum power output. In this manner,
the tip-speed/wind-speed ratio is the indirectly maintained at
an optimum constant value, thereby optimizing the performance
of the machine without the need to continuously and precisely
monitor the wind speed and rotational speed.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop a wind
simulator to furnish wind direction and sub-hourly wind speed
to users of wind speed information, particularly for wind
erosion modeling. We analyzed the Wind Energy Resource
Information System data to determine scale and shape
parameters of the Weibull distribution for each of the 16
cardinal directions for each month at 704 locations in the
United States. We also summarized wind direction
distributions, ratio of daily maximum to daily minimum wind
speed, and hour of maximum wind speed by month for each
location. This summary of historical wind statistics
constitutes a compact data base for wind simulation. Equations
were formulated and procedures developed and used with the
compact data base and a random number generator to simulate
wind direction and sub-hourly wind speed. Cumulative wind
speed distributions, calculated from the Weibull parameters,
and wind speeds simulated at one-hour intervals for 1000 days
agreed well. The model reflects historical day-to-day wind
variation and wind speed variations within a day. It will be
useful to those needing wind speed and wind direction
information and will provide the wind simulator requirements
in a wind erosion prediction system.

Abstract: Wind erosion researchers need field equipment and
techniques for ascertaining threshold wind velocities and the
amount and vertical distribution of the eroded soil particles.
To detect moving soil particles and field erosion, sensors and
soil samplers to measure surface creep and airborne particles
have been developed. A power expression will describe the
variation in amounts of suspended material to a 2-m height.
The quantity of material (f) and height of material (y) within
the saltation zone can be explained by the expression f =
fo(1-y/sigma)beta where "fo" is surface creep, sigma is height
below which 50% of the total mass flow occurs in the saltation
process, and beta is the slope of the line. With this
equipment and the analytical techniques described, the wind
erosion process can be studied in the field, and the
effectiveness of wind erosion control systems can be
 evaluated.

Abstract: Wind profile parameters are required to estimate
aerodynamic boundary layer resistances for heat, water vapor,
and momentum transfer. Traditional methods used to compute
these parameters take time to program, are slow to reach
solutions, and often fail to achieve solution convergence.
This study evaluated the applicability of a commercial
mathematics software package, MathCAD, to estimate the three
 parameters--friction velocity (U ), zero-plane displacement
height (d), and the roughness length, Zo--of the adiabatic
log-law wind profile. The solutions were evaluated and
compared to previous published solutions for several wind
profiles using traditional methods. MathCAD was found to solve
the wind profiles rapidly without convergence difficulty on
the tested profiles. In all the comparisons, MathCAD produced
almost exact duplications of previously published results. The
ease, speed, and accuracy of the solution method employed in
MathCAD appear to be superior to the more traditional methods.
