Quick Bibliography Series
Bibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the
National Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are
not indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject.
However, the citations are a substantial resource for recent
investigations on a given topic. They also serve the purpose
of bringing the literature of agriculture to the interested
user who, in many cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-
line searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic
and evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria.
The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.
Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
construed as endorsement or disapproval.
To request a copy of a bibliography in this series, send the
series title, series number and self-addressed gummed label

Abstract: The close affiliation between the honey bee
industry and commercial pollination of U.S. crops is
described, followed by a literature review that demonstrates
why insufficient numbers of honey bees may be available to
support adequate crop pollination services in the near future.
Recent recommendations offering different methods to increase
numbers of crop pollinators (continued honey bee research,
establishment of management habitats, and development of
additional non-honey bee pollinators) are described, and the
positive and negative characteristics of each proposal are
discussed. The status of crop pollination is then reviewed in
some detail, followed by a recommendation to combine
pollinator studies into one collaborative pollination program
focused on producing the maximum number of efficient crop
pollinators in the shortest possible time frame.

Abstract: This paper presents a dynamic econometric model of
the U.S. beekeeping industry for policy analysis and economic
projections. Data from 1952 to 1984 were used to estimate the
model by three-stage least squares. The model indicates that,
when the federal price support for honey exceeded the market
price, the federal program had a significant impact on several
sectors of the industry. A comparison of beekeeper revenue,
consumer expenditures, and federal government expenditures
suggests the honey support program was an ineffective means of
supporting honey prices from 1982 through 1984.

Abstract: Colonies of honey bees, Apis mellifera L., infested
with Acarapis woodi (Rennie) were studied during the four
winters of 1985-1989 in New York state. Samples of bees were
obtained from colonies on several dates from fall to spring to
determine mite prevalence and mite load scores. Mite
infestations were much heavier than those reported elsewhere
in North America. Over the two winters for which adequate data
were available (1987-1988 and 1988-1989), colonies with heavy
mite infestations had significantly greater mortality. Spring
brood areas were negatively correlated with mite prevalence
and mite load scores. However, the strength of these
correlations varied depending on the month and the year. These
results indicate that tracheal mites have a substantial
negative effect on colonies of honey bees in New York.

Abstract: A bee-shipping container comprising an elongated,
hollow, imperforate-walled tube being open at both ends, a
plug for each end, wherein each plug comprises a perforated
disc having a thickness sufficient to substantially reduce
visibility of the bees and prevent handlers from being stung
through the disc, and at least one protruding member extending
away from the disc and longitudinally beyond the outer
extremity of the tube to butt against any external flat
surface which inadvertently comes into contact with the plug,
thereby to maintain direct communication between the disc and
ambient air surrounding the tube whenever such contact is
made.

Abstract: The economic gains due to honey bee (Apis mellifera
L.) agricultural pollination are evaluated. The method of
analysis focuses on the gains to consumers through lower
prices for crops that are benefited by honey bees. Economic
demand functions for the major agricultural crops that are
pollinated by bees are estimated. The amounts by which the
yields of pollinated crops are increased are estimated from a
variety of sources. In the final step, the surplus realized by
consumers of these crops that would be lost if honey bees were
depleted is determined. The annual social gains are estimated
to range between $1.6 and $5.7 billion.
