Quick Bibliography SeriesBibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the
National Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are
not indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject.
However, the citations are a substantial resource for recent
investigations on a given topic. They also serve the purpose
of bringing the literature of agriculture to the interested
user who, in many cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-
line searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic
and evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria.

The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.

Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
 construed as endorsement or disapproval.

Abstract: Recent advances in crop management have enabled the
production of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in most of
the Canadian prairies. The agronomic performance of dominant
hard red winter and high-quality hard red spring wheat
cultivars was compared in semiarid and dry subhumid regions of
Saskatchewan. In 15 trials, winter wheat (WW) outyielded
spring wheat (SW) by an average 36%, and in three trials,
'Norstar' WW yielded 26% higher than the high-yielding
semidwarf SW, 'RY 320.' Protein yield was higher for WW in two
of 15 trials and protein concentration was always higher for
SW. Higher grain yield of WW was attributed mainly to the
production of a higher kernel number per square meter (KNO).
Crop development rate, aerial dry matter production,
evapotranspiration (ET), and water use efficiency (WUE), were
measured for Norstar WW and 'Katepwa' SW in six trials grown
between 1986 and 1988. The period between Zadoks growth stage
(ZGS) 21 and 65 was 4 to 14 d longer for Norstar than for
Katepwa. Average daily air temperature between ZGS 21 and 65
was 2.6 degrees C higher for Katepwa, and daily air
temperature during this period was negatively correlated with
KNO in both cultivars. Early season dry matter production was
highest for Norstar. These early season cultivar differences
gradually disappeared and, with the exception of two trials,
total dry matter was similar by crop maturity. Harvest index
was significantly higher for Norstar in five of six trials.
Seasonal ET patterns were similar for Norstar and Katepwa,
except in three of six trials where ET in early May was
significantly higher for the WW cultivar. The WUE for dry
matter production, grain yield and grain protein yield was
 consistently higher for Norstar.

Abstract: Globe artichokes (Cynara scolymus L.) were grown
for 2 years in artificially salinized field plots in the
irrigated desert area near Brawley, Calif. Saline treatments
were imposed by irrigation with waters that contained equal
weights of NaCl and CaCl2. Increased incidence and severity of
Ca deficiency in the inner bracts of artichoke buds were
directly related to increased levels of salinity. The Ca-
deficient bracts were subject to infection by species of
Botrytis and Erwinia. The number of marketable artichokes was
reduced 20% or more when irrigation water salinity exceeded
 2.0 dS.m-1, and up to 50% at 10 dS.m-1. Calcium deficiency in
the artichoke bud is believed to be the result of disparate Ca
distribution among the tissues, which is caused by high
transpiration rates in the desert environment and the
reduction in root pressure by soil salinity. Elemental
analysis of leaf tissues can not be used to predict Ca
 deficiency within the artichoke buds.

Abstract: Long-term N fertilizer trials with dryland wheat
(Triticum aestivum L.) are frequently confounded by large
year-to-year variability in yields resulting from moisture
stress fluctuations. To account for this variability, an N
fertilizer study was conducted in which the magnitude of
moisture stress was monitored. The experiment was carried out
during 1983 and 1984 (389 and 136 mm of seasonal rainfall,
respectively) on a Plinthustalf loamy fine sand soil, with
wheat (cv. Betta), using a completely randomized block design
with four replicates and five levels (N) of N fertilizer: 0,
 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg N ha-1. The seasonal moisture stress
index, S, was estimated from a weighted product of ET/ET(p)
ratios (actual to potential evapotranspiration) obtained for
the different phenological wheat growing periods. The ET was
estimated from soil moisture (monitored by means of a neutron
moisture meter), whereas ET(p) was calculated from
meterological measurements using Penman's equation. The
response to N in both years was significant; the mean yields
 were 3.18 and 1.7 Mg ha-1, for the 1983 and 1984 seasons,
respectively. The data were statistically analyzed by means of
a postulated multiple regression model, with N and S levels as
the explanatory variables. The model was validated using yield
and meterological data from several other 2-yr N response
studies. A good correlation (R(2) = 0.63, standard error of
the estimate = 0.27 Mg ha-1) was obtained between the
predicted and the observed yields. The results of the study
highlight the need for moisture stress measurements to be
included in fertilizer trials conducted in areas of large
 seasonal rainfall variability.

Abstract: To select the best legume cover crop to grow for a
given cropping situation, the producer needs knowledge of
relative growth rates, N2-fixation and N-uptake rates, and
water use for various potential planting dates. Such an
experiment was conducted for 2 yr at Mandan, ND, in which 10
legume species were planted on or shortly after the first day
of May, June, July, and August each year. Soil and plant
samples were collected periodically after each planting date
to evaluate rates of dry-matter production, N accumulation,
and water use. Potential N2-fixation rate was measured in one
season only. For the first 40 to 90 d after planting, large-
seeded annuals such as faba bean (Vicia faba L.) field pea
(Pisum sativum L.), and soybean (Glycine max [L] Merr.)
generally exhibited most rapid growth, N accumulation, and
water use (these three parameters were generally closely
related for all samplings). With more than 90 d growth,
species such as Korean lespedeza (Lespedeza stipulacea
Maxim.), yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officianalis L.), and
alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) also began to exhibit rapid
growth. One surprising result was the outstanding growth of
May-planted subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) in
one (ample moisture) of the two seasons. For the shorter
growth periods, faba bean exhibited good growth
characteristics at all planting dates, and field pea was
satisfactory at most. July and August planting of slower
growing species generally resulted in relatively little growth
by the end of the season. In most instances, water-use
efficiency was greatest for the May planting, and highest
values were often recorded for field pea, faba bean, and
subterranean clover. These results identify those legume
species best adapted for a given planting date and duration of
growth under the climatic conditions of this experiment.

Abstract: Groundwater recharge is one of the most difficult
components of the water balance to measure. For this reason,
electromagnetic methods have been used to infer its
variability from measurements of apparent electrical
conductivity. In this study, groundwater recharge was
estimated at 20 sites using unsaturated zone chloride methods.
Interpolation between drill sites was accomplished with the
 aid of a helicopter-borne electromagnetic survey (DIGHEM(IV)).
Correlations between recharge and apparent electrical
conductivity were only significant (R2 = 65%) at the highest
frequency (56,000 Hz). Using these single-frequency data,
variations in recharge were mapped over an area of 32 km2.
Recharge, as inferred from the electromagnetic data, appears
to be lognormally distributed, and varies from less than 1 to
more than 50 mm yr-1. Within the study region, spatially
averaged recharge can be estimated from the electromagnetic
data, with an accuracy of approximately -60%, +140% (90%
probability). This is comparable to the estimation accuracy
when surface electromagnetic methods are used. Aerial
electromagnetic methods appear very useful for identifying
areas of high and low recharge over large regions.

Abstract: In the drier areas of Syria yields of barley, the
principal crop, are low. Due to the variability in rainfall,
fertilizer use is perceived as risky. Barley-fertilizer trials
have been conducted on farmer's fields over a period of four
years to investigate whether the large yield response to
fertilizer observed on research sites could be achieved under
farmers' conditions. Data were pooled across years and sites
and response functions estimated. Simple optimization analysis
shows that economic optimum fertilizer rates vary considerably
with rainfall and relative prices. Historical rainfall data
are combined with the estimated response functions, and
stochastic dominance analysis is used to compare the riskiness
of fertilizer treatments in terms of net benefits and benefit-
cost ratios. Results show that, given the estimated expected
rainfall in barley producing areas, fertilizer use, especially
at low levels, may not be as risky as has been believed.
Extensions of the methodology to include other environmental
variables, or to target recommendations, are discussed.

Abstract: Low precipitation limits dryland crop yields in
semiarid regions. Irrigation can increase yields, but
declining water supplies, competition for water, and high
pumping costs have caused an increased emphasis on water
conservation in many regions. Water conservation, however,
often is hindered by soil surface conditions that cause
runoff, even from small rainstorms. The objective of this
study was to determine the effect of tillage system and crop
residue [winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L.; grain sorghum,
Sorghum bicolor L.) Moench] treatments on infiltration of
simulated rainfall on Pullman (fine mixed, thermic Torrertic
Paleustoll) soil at Bushland, TX. Treatments were moldboard
plowing plus disking, rotary tillage, sweep tillage with
residues removed, and no-tillage with residues left in place,
no-tillage with residues removed, and no-tillage with residues
left in place. Different tillage systems caused significant
differences in soil aggregate size, aggregate stability,
organic-matter concentration, initial water content, sediment
loss during the rainstorms, bulk density, surface residue
cover, and surface roughness. Compared with the no-tillage
treatments, moldboard plowing usually caused the greatest
differences in the soil conditions. There was no close
relationship, however, between any soil condition and
infiltration. With limited residues, soil-loosening tillage
 increased infiltration.

Abstract: In a system of summer fallow once in 3 or 4 years
for the production of wheat, plowing for the fallow is done in
May or early June. At this time moisture conditions are
usually favorable for rapid decomposition of straw and the
whole summer period is allowed for it. Through the energy,
furnished by straw there may even be additions of nitrogen by
free fixation. But for the second or third crops after fallow,
it is essential that any turning under of stubble and straw be
done immediately after harvest and the soil packed order to
 favor rapid decomposition.
