Abstract: As a subculture, the Amish sustain a
distinctive way of life while maintaining linkages with the
larger society. Historically, this has been accomplished within
the economic sphere through restriction of livelihood to farming
and at-home occupations. This article documents the growing
differentiation of the occupational structure of the Amish and
their movement to nonfarm occupations. Occupational changes are
discussed in terms of their impacts on Amish society.

Abstract: An interdisciplinary team of extension
workers conducted a 2-yr demonstration project using 30 herds
with the objectives of increasing production efficiency and
profitability and gaining experience in integrated problem
solving. After 1 yr, 88% of the participants thought that the
monthly fee paid to extension was a profitable investment. At
the end of the project, 70% of the participants thought that
increases in milk yield per cow were due to a combination of
improvements in two to four management areas rather than to
changes in any single management discipline. Additional labor
was necessary to implement recommendations. Two issues were key
in successfully convincing dairy operators and families to
accept management recommendations: 1) a coordinated team effort
aimed at integrated problem solving, followed by written
recommendations and regular dialogue with the producer, and 2)
possession of effective social decision-making skill by the
participant family. Most farms in the project depended primarily
on family labor and social decision making to implement
management changes. Only those families that could jointly
agree to implement a new management decision fully benefited from
professional advice. A demonstration project of
interdisciplinary dairy advising was an effective method to gain
problem-solving expertise and to build credibility for extension
services.

Abstract: The growth of market capitalism and the
technological advances of the last two centuries underlie the
relentless process of structural change in agriculture.
Substantial occupational migration out of farming and
geographical migration from rural to urban areas is a
characteristic of most, if not all, economies in the 20th
century. The process of rural-urban migration, and the resulting
urban problems have received considerable attention. The fate of
the residual farm population has received less scrutiny and is
less well understood. In the United States we observe
considerable farm poverty, increasing farm-size inequality, and a
disturbing decay of rural communities. For the last half century,
the problem of low farm incomes has been perceived as a farm
problem amenable to solution by appropriate farm policy. In this
paper, a model is proposed which suggests that farm poverty and
inequality are inevitable consequences of a rural-urban migration
process in which two types of human capital play a fundamental
role. General human capital determines a person's expected
nonfarm income, while farming-specific human capital determines
his/her productivity in farming. It is argued that inadequate
human capital combined with positive rural-urban migration cost,
positive farm technology adoption costs, and inelastic demand for
farm output, can explain persistently high levels of farm
poverty, and increasing farm size inequality. The model suggests
that traditional farm policies are inappropriate. Programs that
directly address the problems of inadequate human capital are
advocated.

Abstract: Farms in NE Conejos County, Colorado, are
characterized by limited resources, uncertain surface flow
irrigation systems, and mixed crop- livestock enterprise
combinations which are dependent on public grazing resources. To
model decision making on these farms, a linear program is
developed stressing enterprise choices under conditions of
multiple resource constraints. Differential access to grazing
resources and irrigation water is emphasized in this research.
Regarding the water resource, the model reflects farms situated
alternatively on high-, medium-, and low-priority irrigation
ditches within the Alamosa-La Jara river system, each with and
without supplemental pumping. Differences are found in optimum
enterprise mixes, net returns, choice of cropping technology,
level of marketings, and other characteristics in response to
variations in the availability of irrigation water. Implications
are presented for alternative improvement strategies.

Abstract: The study examines Louisiana small farmers'
reasons for not participating in the Conservation Reserve Program
(CRP), their awareness of the program, and their willingness to
participate in the program. The results suggest that: farmers do
not participate in the CRP if revenues from cropland are an
important source of income, or if they are tenants; awareness is
significantly related to education, income, race, and average
return per acre; willingness is positively influenced by payment
per acre, age, and farm status. Participation depends on whether
payments per acre are comparable to the opportunity costs of
removing cropland from production.

Descriptors: farmers; workers; farm-families; off-farm-
employment; part-time-employment; probability; probabilistic-
models; labor-allocation; virginia
Abstract: Employment history affects subsequent
choices. Based on their original job choice, operators are
divided into farmers and workers. Equations are estimated to
determine their probabilities of working off-the-farm. Education
increases the probability that workers work off the- farm,
whereas vocational training increases farmers' probability. The
probability of working off-the-farm decreases as unearned income
increases, and its impact on workers is larger than on farmers.
An employed spouse increases the probability that farmers work
off-the-farm, but has the opposite impact for workers.
Employment density increases the probability that workers will
work off-the-farm.

Abstract: Issues raised by the feminist epistemic
critique of social science are used to examine what is meant by
local knowledge and its contribution to analyses of agricultural
sustainability. Employing the concepts of partial perspective,
lived experience, and the complexity of social context, this
paper focuses attention on the juxtaposition of local and
scientific knowledge and challenges those interpretations of
local knowledge production that ignore the various people,
relations, and interests constituting the rural economy. An
examination of local as a contested, complex, and heterogeneous
domain refines the work of Kloppenburg (1991) and his commitment
to the significance of local knowledge in constructing
opportunities for sustainable agriculture. Attention to the on-
farm gender division of labor helps to identify gender
differences as critical in constituting the family farm and to
elaborate how the different experiences of women and men may
offer alternative visions of what constitutes sustainable
agricultural production.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to monitor
activity and movement of Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga
cerealella (Olivier), in a small-farm ecosystem. Moth activity
was determined using sticky traps placed in bin vents of storage
bins containing shelled corn and pheromone traps placed in
concentric circles across the farm with the bins at the center.
Moth activity was concentrated in and around the grain bins from
June to August and at corn plots in September and October. Mark-
recaputre studies confirmed moth dispersal from the bins to corn
plots during July- September. Knowledge of the spatial dynamics
of Angoumois grain moth may contribute to pest management
programs.

Abstract: Farmers and policymakers have recognized the
need for alternative technologies for reducing costs and
increasing profit for limited resource farmers. Plastic mulch
has been evaluated as an alternative technology on experimental
stations in the Southeast but its use has not yet gained wide
acceptance among limited resource vegetable producers in the
area. In this study, the economic feasibility of plastic mulch
was evaluated as a profit enhancing technology for limited
resource farmers. A farmer survey and farm simulation model were
used in the evaluation of this technology. It was noted in the
survey that most of the farmers in the research area were part-
time and were above 50 years old. The average age was 60, with a
minimum of 29 and maximum of 88. Plastic mulch resulted in
increased output and farm revenue. The capital turnover ratio
for production with plastic mulch was higher than for production
without plastic mulch. Each hour of labor used with plastic
mulch generated six times more net revenues than without plastic
mulch. The total investment required for plastic mulch more than
doubled, indicating that it might be difficult to encourage this
age group of farmers to adopt the technology without easy credit
arrangements. The diffusion of this technology may be difficult
unless the alternative of renting vs. buying the necessary
equipment is presented to this age group of farmers.

Abstract: Farm family disposable income is generated
from farm operations, off-farm sources, and government payments.
If these three income components are fungible (a dollar from one
source is a perfect substitute for a dollar from another source),
then the propensities to consume each should be the same. This
study examines the farm family propensity to consume from
separate income sources. Results indicate that the propensity to
consume off-farm income and government payments is higher than
the propensity to consume farm income.

Abstract: Changes in the size, shape, arrangement, and
replication of small plats have necessitated changes in the
methods used in the planting, harvesting, and threshing of the
grain grown on such plats. Features of five machines now in use
on the plant breeding plats at East Lansing and developed under
a cooperative project between the sections of Farm Crops and
Agricultural Engineering of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment
Station are discussed in this article with the hope that they may
be helpful to other workers. Whenever a change has been made, it
has been judged on the basis of (1) maintenance of purity, that
is, freedom from mechanical mixture; (2) simplicity of operation;
(3) efficient use of man power; (4) simplicity of construction;
and (5) increase in speed of operation. The first requirement is
the most essential and its importance is recognized by all. The
other requirements are making themselves felt more and more as
experiments are becoming more extensive and refined and expense
is becoming more of a factor in planting, harvesting, and
threshing.

Abstract: Uncertainties facing farm enterprises place a
premium on flexibility and adaptability in the work force. A
study of 695 North Carolina farm couples is used to examine the
extent to which 12 tasks on a farm are shared among family
members and hired workers. Using husband alone as the norm, this
pattern is contrasted with husband and son, husband and wife,
husband and hired help, and husband and other statuses.
Production, support, and household tasks are distinguished. Type
of crop and amount of machinery used make a difference to status
variation in production tasks' requiring more sharing on the
part of the husband, but have less impact on support and
household tasks. The latter are affected more by whether the
husband or wife works off the farm. Despite status variation,
farm work remains highly gendered; if the husband shares
production work, it is with his son or a hired worker.

Abstract: Multiple indicators of the structure of
agriculture were extracted from the U.S. Census of Agriculture
for the years 1982, 1987, and 1992, and used to extend previous
work by Wimberley (1987). Exploratory factor analysis results for
each year yielded three dimensions of agristructure:
corporate-commercial, farming-firm and small-farm. Factor-scores
used to estimate scales had high reliabilities (omega
coefficients > .9) and strong inter-temporal correlations for
each scale across years were observed. The content of each scale
was consistent across the three years, suggesting that structural
shifts in the elements defining "agristructure" were minimal.
Because the 1980s were a turbulent period for U.S. agriculture,
the patterns describing heterogeneity among counties in each year
were investigated. Cluster analysis of each year's three factor
scales produced five homogeneous groups of counties: three,
dominated respectively by small-farms, farming-firms, and
corporate-farms and two mixed groups, which we interpreted as
reflecting transitional situations. Comparisons of these cluster
groupings across the three years identified the emergence of
counties typified by organizational patterns of firm-oriented and
corporate-commercial farming. Moreover, the patterns of temporal
movement by U.S. counties across this typology suggest a
fundamental change from homogeneous family-centered small-farming
concentrations dominant during most of this century. Implications
of the findings are discussed.

Abstract: The influence of demographic and economic
factors on the number of young farm entrants is investigated.
After controlling for the demographic effect, it is found that
higher commodity prices, lower real interest rates, and lower
land values are associated with greater entry. Regional effects
suggest lower entry in states with better nonfarm opportunities.
Demographic factors suggest that the shrinking pool of potential
entrants will lead to further decline in farm entry. The decline
in farm entry has important implications for the future structure
of farming in the United States.
