Special thanks to Blake Aldridge and the National Livestock Ethics Council for assisting in the development of this resource guide, coordinating review of this document, and donating training videos and brochures to the collection of the National Agricultural Library (NAL). Thanks also to Jeff Goodwin, 4-H and Youth Specialist, at the University of Idaho, for sharing his many resources on livestock ethics. Thank you to Rich Reynnells, National Program Leader, Poultry Science, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, for initiating AWIC's participation in this project and for his comments and review. Thanks also goes to the entire AWIC staff for their dedication in producing quality animal welfare resources, many of which are cited in this document. Special thanks to D'Anna Jensen for designing the cover and to Barbara Buchanan for assistance in preparing the document for printing.
The following resource guide was developed to assist 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA), and other youth and college agricultural educators in locating materials to assist in teaching animal welfare and ethics. Emphasis was placed on providing materials that are accessible through land grant universities, the collection of the National Agricultural Library (NAL), or the internet. The materials listed include audiovisuals, books, bibliographies, conference proceedings, journal articles, organizations, and websites. This listing is not comprehensive but is intended to act as a starting point for educators to develop curriculum to meet their own specific needs. Selected resources cover welfare, ethics, behavior, care, and health of livestock and poultry.
Inclusion of materials in this guide does not constitute endorsement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Items appearing in this publication do not represent positions or policies of the Department of Agriculture or any agency thereof.
The following list of audiovisuals was excerpted from the AWIC publication: Audio-visuals Relating to Animal Care, Use, and Welfare, AWIC Series No. 2000-01, by J.A. Larson and D.J.B. Jensen (2000). To obtain a hard copy of this publication patrons should contact AWIC at (301) 504-6212 or Contact us: http://www.nal.usda.gov/awic/contact.php This publication is also available at the AWIC website at www.nal.usda.gov/awic/pubs/aw2000001.htm
Audiovisuals listed below are available for loan from the National Agricultural Library (NAL). NAL lending policies and other loan information can be obtained from the Collection Services Branch at http://www.nal.usda.gov/services/request.shtml or phone (301) 504-5994.
