Each leaf draws its water from three distant parts of the crown, about 3/5 of the way around. With a 3-5 phyllotaxy the next leaf completes the encirclement of the crown with its vascular strands. In this diagram A is a bud, B the leaf base, and C the vascular strand. B is an actual crown with all but the xylem tissue dissolved out. (After White)
