National Agricultural Library Document Delivery Services
With over two million volumes dating from the fifteenth century to the present, the National Agricultural Library is a rich resource for material on all aspects of the history of agriculture in the broadest sense.
Historical research at the Library is centered in the Special Collections Program, located on the fourteenth floor. The collection contains original manuscripts; archival materials; 50,000 rare books; a photographic collection of over 60,000 prints; 55,000 slides; 16,000 maps; posters; works of botanical art; oral histories; and one of the world's largest nursery and seed trade catalog collections.
Before proceeding to the Special Collections Program, we suggest you start your research in the General Collection. The reference librarian on duty in the Main Reading Room will assist you in using the various print and computerized resources. General information is given in the Guide to Services of the National Agricultural Library. Guides to materials in the Main Reading Room kept at the Reference Desk include: Miscellaneous Publications in the NAL Main Reading Room; Keyword Index to Reference Directory Titles; Titles Available on CD-ROM; and Abstracts and Indexes in the Main Reading Room.
This publication is designed as an entree to historical research at the National Agricultural Library, not as a comprehensive bibliography. Only a small number of the thousands of books and articles of historical interest have been included. Although the collection is worldwide in scope, containing material in some 75 languages, emphasis is on American agriculture and on English language publications.
The Guide is divided into two sections: the General Collection, and Additional Resources. In addition to works dealing exclusively with agriculture, a limited number of selected materials in general history, the history of science, medicine, and technology, and general biography have been included.
NAL call numbers are given after each bibliographical citation. An asterisk following the call number indicates that the item is available in the Main Reading Room. In many cases there is also a copy in the stacks and in the Special Collections Reading Room.

RETURN TO THE TABLE OF CONTENTSISIS (Integrated System for Information Services)
Online Public Access Catalog
ISIS, the Library's computerized card catalog, is updated daily and contains the most current bibliographic citations for books, journals/periodicals, reports, maps, audiovisuals, CD-ROMs, software, and other materials added to the NAL collections. For materials published prior to 1966, consult the card catalog if not found in ISIS.
ISIS also serves as an agricultural union catalog that includes bibliographic citations for materials of the U.S. National Arboretum Library, the DC Reference Center and five USDA Regional Research Center Libraries. Records from cooperating libraries are added on an ongoing basis. Their publications may or may not be in the NAL collection.
ISIS contains a separate Journal Article Citations database of the most current bibliographic citations for journal/periodical articles, book chapters, reprints, and other specialized materials indexed by NAL and cooperators. For additional bibliographic citations to journal articles, book chapters, etc., consult the Bibliography of Agriculture and the AGRICOLA database on CD-ROM.
Guides to searching ISIS are located at each workstation. The Reference Librarian on duty assists patrons in using the system.
The headings currently used for cataloging records are listed in the volumes of the Library of Congress Subject Headings found near each ISIS terminal. Examples of headings under which books on the history of agriculture can be found include:
AGRICULTURE -- HISTORY
AGRICULTURE -- KANSAS -- HISTORY
AGRICULTURE -- UNITED STATES -- HISTORY
AGRICULTURE -- ECONOMIC ASPECTS -- HISTORY
AGRICULTURE AND STATE -- UNITED STATES -- HISTORY
FARMS -- HISTORY
FARMS -- ENGLAND -- HISTORY
FORESTS AND FORESTRY -- UNITED STATES -- HISTORY
FRONTIER AND PIONEER LIFE
GARDENING -- HISTORY
HORTICULTURE -- HISTORY
LIVESTOCK -- HISTORY
RURAL DEVELOPMENT -- FRANCE -- HISTORY
VETERINARY MEDICINE -- HISTORY
The following are examples of terms for more specific fields of agriculture that can be used without the "history" subheading:
ADJUSTMENT ACTBecause cataloging practices have varied over the years and the word "history" is not always found in the subject heading for a historical book, it is advisable to search using keywords as well as Library of Congress subject headings. Create sets using "history" or "historical" and combine them with the term or terms for the subject area of interest. Because ISIS processes a maximum of 5001 terms at a time, it may be necessary to do a search in several steps. For example, to find works on the history of horses, type:
w/history
(Set 1)
b/horse or horses
(Set 4)
b/1 and 4
(Set 5) Retrieves records containing the word "history" and "horse" or "horses."
w/historical
(Set 6)
b/6 and 4
(Set 7) Retrieves records containing "historical" and
"horse" or "horses."
b/5 or 7
(Set 8) Combines Sets 5 and 7 into one set.
The text below shows how this search will appear on the ISIS terminal screen.

When searching for a particular broad subject area, you may want to select terms from the ISIS Word Phrase List found toward the back of the search guide. For example, to retrieve items on the history of the U.S. Forest Service, type:
w/"Forest Service"
(Set 1)The text below shows how this search will appear on the ISIS terminal screen.

ISIS also contains some records for books or reports that deal with the history of a particular subject, but which do not have the words "history " or "historical" in any part of the bibliographic record. This is particularly common with older entries. Search for these using terms for the subject only.
The bibliographic database produced by the NAL, AGRICOLA contains over three million records, primarily of literature citations for journal articles. It also includes records for monographs, proceedings, dissertations, patents, translations, technical reports, and non-print materials. AGRICOLA corresponds to the print index, the Bibliography of Agriculture, for the years 1970 to the present. (The print index must be used for the period between 1942 and 1969.)
Over 2,000 journals are currently indexed in AGRICOLA. Those dealing specifically with the history of agriculture include: Agricultural History; Agricultural History Review;Explorations in Economic History; and The Journal of EconomicHistory.
AGRICOLA may be accessed online by a reference librarian through DIALOG Information Services, Inc., or OCLC. Library patrons may do their own AGRICOLA searching through ISIS or on CD-ROM at workstations in the Main Reading Room. Instructions for use and copies of Basics of Searching AGRICOLA on SilverPlatter CD-ROM are located at each workstation. The reference librarian will help you get started and provide assistance as needed.
Since January 1985, AGRICOLA has been indexed using terms from the CAB Thesaurus. These terms may be typed in at the Find prompt or selected from the CD-ROM index using the F5 key. CAB descriptors include: History; Historical records; Historic sites; Historic buildings; Veterinary history. The system may also be searched using keywords.
The following is an example of a search to find citations in English on the history of horticulture. Additional examples are given in the workstation guides.

Records added to AGRICOLA since 1980 include modified AGRIS subject category codes. Codes are listed in Basics of Searching AGRICOLA on SilverPlatter CD-ROM and described in detail in AGRICOLA Subject Category Codes with Scope Notes. The code for Agricultural History and Biography is B500. This can be used in combination with other terms or subject category codes to search for records dealing with the historical aspect of a subject. In the following example, the codes for veterinary medicine and veterinary pharmacology, L800 and L810, are used with B500 in a search of AGRICOLA on SilverPlatter CD-ROM 1984-1991 for citations on the history of veterinary medicine.

When searching records added to AGRICOLA prior to 1980 the earlier category codes must be used. In 1970-71 the codes assigned to historical material were 05 (General Agriculture) or 75 (Social Science). These are searched on SilverPlatter as CC=500 or CC=7500. The following codes were used from 1972-79: 0505, 1005, 1090, 1520, 3505, 4005, and 9505. These are searched as CC=0505, etc. A description of the subjects included in these codes is given in Basics of Searching AGRICOLA on SilverPlatter CD-ROM.
In addition to AGRICOLA, agricultural databases containing a significant number of historically related citations include: CAB ABSTRACTS, AGRIS, TROPAG & RURAL, and Biological and Agricultural Index. These databases may be accessed online or on CD-ROM. The former three are issued on compact disk by SilverPlatter Information, Inc. and use the same search software as AGRICOLA. Search aids describing the particular features of each database are in the CD-ROM User Guides notebook at each workstation. For a descriptive list of databases at NAL, see Titles Available on CD-ROM in the Main Reading Room.
ERIC, the database on education materials from the U.S. Dept. of Education, also contains citations on agricultural history. Ask the Reference Librarian for help in using ERIC on SilverPlatter CD-ROM.
Important databases in the field of history not available on compact disk at NAL include Historical Abstracts, America: History and Life, and Biography Master Index. For additional files, see Computer-Readable Databases: A Directory and Data Sourcebook.NAL call no.: Z699.22 C65*
RETURN TO THE TABLE OF CONTENTSThose doing historical research will be particularly interested in the older materials contained in the Library's Dictionary Card Catalog located in the lobby. The Dictionary Catalog is also available in book form in the Main Reading Room and in Special Collections. It includes references to all publications cataloged by NAL from 1862 to 1965. Most of these materials are not found on ISIS or AGRICOLA.
Author, title, and subject cards are inter filed in one alphabetical listing. Subtopics are indicated by a period. e.g., "Entomology. History." Be aware that many older works of history are cataloged without the "History" subheading.
Cards for materials cataloged between 1966 and July 1987 are found in the Name/Subject catalog located in the lobby. This catalog has largely been replaced by ISIS, the Library's online catalog. However, there are a small number of books processed between 1966 and the early 1970's for which no computerized records exist. These materials can only be located through the Name/Subject Catalog.
This is a divided catalog with cards filed in two alphabets. The Name catalog includes personal and corporate entries for works by or about a person or organization. The Subject catalog contains entries for the subjects of publications.
References to many important scientific papers from the earliest times through mid-1952 are found in the Plant Science Catalog of the National Agricultural Library. The catalog consists of four divisions: author catalog, plant pathology catalog, paleobotany catalog, and a catalog of plant science journals. The author catalog is located on the North Wall of the Main Reading Room; the other three catalogs are on the West Wall. The botany subject catalog, formerly part of this card catalog, is now available in print as the Botany Subject Index . NAL call no.: Z5360.N3 1958*
For further information, see The Plant Science Catalog of the National Agricultural Library: Fact Sheet; May 10, 1988; available at the Reference Desk.
A file of translations of articles and books in the NAL collection, the Translations Catalog contains some material of historical interest from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The catalog is located in the outer lobby in the drawers following the Subject Catalog. It is also available in book form in the Main Reading Room as volume 73 of the Dictionary Catalog of the National Agricultural Library. Since 1970 all translations have been indexed in the Library's AGRICOLA database.
Additional translations may be identified through the National Union Catalog, the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections, and the catalogs of other major collections.
