The title page and dedication to Humphry Marshall's Arbustum Americanum: The American Grove, 1785, the first American imprint on native trees and shrubs. Marshall published Arbustum with the assistance of Samuel Vaughan, an English planter from Jamaica who settled in Philadelphia, and was a friend of Benjamin Franklin.
The spelling "Arbustrum" is a misprint. "Arbustum" is Latin, meaning a place where trees are planted, a grove, orchard, or plantation; there is no such word in Latin as "arbustrum."
