Infant Nutrition and Feeding: A Guide for Use in the WIC and CSF Programs, is a reference handbook for staff of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) that provide nutrition education to the parents and guardians of infants.
This is an updated version of Infant Nutrition and Feeding: A Reference Handbook for Nutrition and Health Counselors in the WIC and CSF Programs, originally published in 1993. The handbook provides an overview of topics related to infant nutrition and feeding and answers some common questions on feeding infants. Chapter topics include the nutritional needs of infants; the development of feeding skills; breastfeeding; formula feeding; the introduction of complementary foods; infant feeding practices; food selection, preparation, sanitation, and storage; oral health; vegetarian nutrition; common gastrointestinal problems; obesity; and physical activity/motor skill development. The handbook can be used as a resource in disseminating appropriate and accurate information to participants as well as for planning individual counseling sessions, group classes, and staff in-service training sessions.
This handbook was the basis for the development of a new lesson now available on WIC Learning Online (WLOL), Feeding Infants: Nourishing Attitudes and Techniques. This lesson includes 3 modules: Feeding Infants 0 - 6, Feeding Infants 6 - 12, and Infant Formula Basics.
The Infant Nutrition and Feeding Guide is currently available in PDF format. It will be available in print format in 2008.
