The following is a list of bibliographic databases on water quality
topics. A particular database may be available through online
subscription services, on CD-ROM and/or via the Internet. The databases listed here are primarily fee-based, although some may be available for use at libraries without charge. For a listing of freely available (including nonbibliographic) water-related

- AGRICOLA (1970-present)
National Agricultural Library, Agricultural Research Service,
United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, MD
Provides comprehensive coverage of worldwide literature of
agriculture and related subjects, such as pollution, pesticides,
and natural resources. Contains over 3 million citations from
the NAL collection of journals, monographs and videos. Has
limited number of abstracts.

- AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY ABSTRACTS
(Part of the Cambridge Biotechnology Research Series)
Covers world literature on agricultural products involving both
plants and animals, new applications across the food environment
and environmental development. Topics include treatment and
disposal of wastes and sewage, and biochemical applications
in water treatment, pollution and industrial hygiene.
Available through the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts Internet
Database Service. CSA provides a subscription service and free
demos of their databases.
- AGRIS INTERNATIONAL (1975-present)
Comprehensive coverage of worldwide agricultural literature on
research results, food production and rural development. Subjects
include aquatic sciences and fisheries, natural resources and
pollution. Corresponds in part with the printed publication,
AgrIndex, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) of the United Nations. Multi-lingual database.

- AQUATIC SCIENCES AND FISHERIES ABSTRACTS (ASFA) (1978-Present)
U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/Cambridge
Scientific Abstracts, Bethesda, MD
Covers the science, technology and management of marine and
freshwater environments. Topics include pollution of aquatic
environments; oceanography, aquaculture, and other living
resources. Contains citations to 5,000 journals, monographs,
conference proceedings and technical reports.
The entire database is available from DIALOG (fee-based) or SilverPlatter Information, Inc.(fee-based).
It is also available via the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
Web site as three separate databases:
Biological Sciences & Living Resources (AFSA-1); Ocean
Technology, Policy & Non-Living Resources, (AFSA-2) and
Aquatic Pollution & Environmental Quality (ASFA-3). These databases

- BIOSIS PREVIEW® (1969-present)
BIOSIS® , Philadelphia, PA
Comprehensive worldwide coverage of research in biological and
biomedical sciences. Contains over 8.3 million citations from
Biological Abstracts(BA)® , Biological Abstracts/RRM® (Reports,
Reviews, Meetings (BA/RRM) and BioResearch Index® (BioI),
the major publications of BIOSIS®. (BA/RRM is the successor
to BioI beginning in 1980.) Includes original research from primary
journals and monograph titles.

- CAB ABSTRACTS (1972-present)
CAB International, Wallingford, Slough, U.K.
Contains agricultural and biological information from all the
records in the 26 main abstract journals published by CAB
International. Covers journals in 37 different languages, as well
as books, theses and conference proceedings. Advantages
in comparison to AGRICOLA: provides abstracts for many
documents and cites many non U.S publications.

- ECOLOGY ABSTRACTS
Provides a cross-section of current findings in ecological research.
Includes coverage on resources and ecosystems management and
modeling, water resources, depletion, erosion and pollution.

- EIS DIGESTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENTS
Presents key issues from government-released environmental impact
statements. Helps user to keep up-to-date on projects and presents
the positive and negative aspects of the projects. Provides
abstracts of government documents.

CIS, A Reed Reference Publishing Company, Bethesda, MD
Provides comprehensive, international coverage of all aspects of
environmental issues. Indexes and abstracts over 5,000 publications,
including journals, government documents and newspapers.

- ENVIRONMENTAL BIBLIOGRAPHY(1973-present)
Environmental Studies Institute, Santa Barbara, CA
Indexes more than 300 environmental periodicals covering subjects
such as water resources, energy and general human ecology. Good
source for students, librarians, land-use planners, government
officials and corporate executives.

- EXTOXNET (EXTension TOXicology NETwork)
University of California at Davis, Oregon State University,
Michigan State University, Cornell University
Information available includes toxicology newsletters and fact
sheets and keyword searchable Pesticide Information Profiles and
Toxicology Information Briefs.
- Ground Water On-Line National Ground Water Association
Searchable database of 78,000 ground water literature citations. NGWA members automatically receive free, unrestricted use of the
on-line database, while nonmembers can subscribe for an access fee.

- MEDLINE®(1966-present)
TOXLINE® (coverage varies by sub-file)
U.S. National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD
Major resources for questions on health effects. MEDLINE covers
most subjects in biomedicine, providing indexes and abstracts of
articles from over 3,700 international journals published in the U.S.
and 70 countries. TOXLINE contains several subfiles, each dealing
with different aspects of toxicology: the adverse effects of
chemicals, drugs and physical agents on living systems.
Approximately 45% of the records added each year are from the
TOXBIB subfile, which is derived from MEDLINE.

- NATIONAL EXTENSION WATER QUALITY DATABASE
Cooperative Extension Service
Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
Contains more than 2,400 citations and 800 full-text documents of
water quality and waste management publications produced by state
cooperative extension services. Publications cover conservation,
drinking water quality, pest, waste and nutrient management, water
wells and testing.
- NTIS (1964-present)
National Technical Information Service (NTIS),
U.S. Department of Commerce, Springfield, VA
Provides access to EPA publications and results of government
sponsored research, development and engineering reports, plus
analyses prepared by federal agencies, their contractors or grantees.
Also contains some state and local government reports. Good source
for urban water quality information. Includes many technical reports
not available elsewhere.
On the NTIS Web site, you can search the Technical Reports Database, which covers 1990 to the present or browse the Environment section.

- OCEANIC ABSTRACTS (1964-present)
Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Bethesda, MD
Indexes and abstracts global technical literature on marine-related
subjects, including oceanography, marine pollution and governmental
and legal aspects of marine resources. Comprehensive database with
over 9,000 citations from approximately 3,500 worldwide sources added
each year.

- POLLUTION ABSTRACTS (1970-present)
Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Bethesda, MD
Provides references to environment-related literature on pollution,
its sources and control. Topics include environmental quality,
pesticides, solid wastes and water pollution. Contains good
coverage of conference proceedings.

- RESEARCH ABSTRACTS DATABASE (1967-October 1993) U. S. Geological Survey Water Resources Scientific Information Center
Source for international water research. Contains 265,000 citations
and abstracts from the scientific literature of water resources. This site is
administered by the Universities Water Information Network.
- SELECTED WATER RESOURCES ABSTRACTS (1939 to present), U.S. Geological Survey
Since July 1994
only U.S. Geological Survey abstracts have been added.
- WATER RESOURCES ABSTRACTS (1967-Present)
Citations from materials collected by water research centers and
institutes in the United States. Covers a broad range of topics
including water resource economics, urban water resources,
planning and management and ground and surface hydrology.
Most citations include abstracts.

- WATERNET TM (1971-present)
American Water Works Association,
Denver, CO
Provides indexing of publications of the American Water Works
Association and the AWWA research foundation. Other sources are:
technical reports and studies from water utilities, U.S. government
reports and international coverage of books and journals, includes
Mexico and Canada. Good source of information on water industry.
