University of Hawaii students practice sustainable and organic agriculture techniques on the 110-acre Hilo Agricultural Farm Laboratory.
The 80-acre Hampshire College Farm Center is a "working farm, as well as a research, education, and outreach facility dedicated to sustainable agriculture." Operates organic Community Supported Agriculture program.
"Fulton Farm is an environmental educational facility and working produce farm." Located on the Fulton Center for Sustainable Living, the farm is USDA certified organic and produces crops for the campus and the community. The farm is available to students for coursework, internships, workstudy and volunteer opportunities. Courses offered include agroecology and permaculture. Fulton Farm hosts an 80-share CSA program and provides workshops, demonstrations, classes and other events for community.
The University Farm Laboratory maintains the campus' only organic farm plot and is open to students for education, to student organizations and to volunteers.
Students can explore organic and sustainable agriculture, agroecology and environmental sciences at the 25-acre Evergreen State College's Organic Farm. The Organic Farm's Sustainable Agriculture Lab is a hands-on training facility. The farm includes a food-grade laboratory, the student-designed and built Organic Farmhouse, and the student-run Demeter's permaculture demonstration site and Community Gardens. A Community Supported Agriculture program and community-based activities also are available.
The Center has on-campus demonstration sites for production and growing techniques, a certified organic production area, and an applied research facilities. The Center assists "small to mid-size farmers and gardeners produce organic and specialty vegetables for sale."
The 90-acre Organic Crops Unit, one of six farming units that make up the East Tennessee Ag Research and Education Center, includes 14 acres certified organic and 7 acres under conventional production. The farms support faculty and graduate student research, with a primary emphasis on sustainable and organic crop production.
Ohio State University organic farming research initiatives and outreach are coordinated through the OFFER program. OFFER's land resources include land on three farms near Wooster and at the John Hirzel Sustainable Agriculture Farming Systems Research Site in northwestern Ohio.
The Organic Farming Research and Education Unit (OFREU), a 20-acre USDA-certified organic farm and research facility, is available for organic vegetable production, the student community supported agriculture program, Sustainable Agriculture Program (SAG) student apprenticeships, teaching resources and courses for the SAG curriculum, and faculty and student research in sustainable organic horticultural production systems. OFREU also serves as a venue for labs and hands-on learning.
The Organic Dairy Research Farm, managed as an integrated agro-ecosystem, conducts research in both organic and conventional farm operations. A primary focus "is to undertake research of relevance to organic farm systems to better serve the organic farming community, consumers, and the environment. "
Three research units in the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station system have certified organic research plots and focus on applied research to support small-scale organic farmers. E.V. Smith Research Center Horticulture Unit is a certified organic vegetable production area where research emphasis areas include certified organic vegetable production and sustainable agriculture. Research at the North Alabama Horticulture Research Center is focused on no-till production of tomatoes, peppers, and sweet potatoes in organic systems. The Plant Science Research Center on the Auburn University campus also conducts research in organic production.
The Stanford Educational Farm is a living laboratory offering academic and experiential opportunities in the practice of sustainable agriculture. "The farm utilizes agroecological relationships to grow over 200 varieties of vegetables, flowers, herbs, field crops and fruit."
The NTCC farm demonstrates and promotes "sustainable agriculture practices including organic vegetable production, management of soil health utilizing cover cropping, no-till techniques, and rain water harvesting all with a primary focus on conserving and renewing natural resources on the farm." The farm offers internships/apprenticeships for sustainable agriculture students and other NTCC students, and serves as is a venue for training and mentoring local agriculture producers. Local FFA high school students, teachers and garden clubs use the farm for hands-on learning.
The Middlebury College Organic Farm serves as an outdoor classroom for students who also grow and sell organic produce to the College's dining facilities and local restaurants and stores.
The farm "is a 15-acre, certified organic year-round teaching and production farm." Its markets include a year-round CSA, an on-campus farm stand, and sales to campus dining halls. Programs include the Organic Farmer Training Program, collaboration with the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Specialization, undergraduate coursework and research, experiential educational opportunities, and Outreach and Extension programs.
Merry Lea Sustainable Farm, the agricultural component of Goshen College's Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, serves the Agroecology Summer Intensive program, the Center's K-12 programs, and the Center's Masters in Environmental Education. The "educational farm demonstrat[es] sustainable agriculture practices for students and the visiting public."
The KU Student Farm "provides individual and community plots where University students, faculty and staff can grow their own food using organic methods."
The KSU Research and Demonstration Farm is a 300-acre farm that "offers students opportunities to conduct research and demonstration projects related to sustainable agriculture, livestock production, horticulture, bioenergy and other land-based studies. The farm includes 11 acres of certified organic land." Organic agriculture research at the university campus takes place in the Atwood Research Facility.
Iowa State University undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and community members manage the 2-acre organic farm and Community Supported Agriculture program.
The certified organic 5.8 acre Indian Valley Organic Farm and Garden is managed through a partnership with Conservation Corps North Bay and University of California Cooperative Extension and is used to teach Marin County residents about local agriculture. The farm also is available to students for research, coursework, and degree program requirements.
The Howdy Farm provides Texas A&M students with "hands on experience in interdisciplinary sustainable agriculture," "facilitate[s] sustainability research for the state of Texas," and "promote[s] organic, sustainable, and environmentally-responsible farming methods."
Oxford College's 11-acre Organic Farm, established in 2014, provides student hands-on experience and educational opportunities. Produce is served in the dining halls, sold at the Emory University farmers market, and sold to local community members through a CSA.
The five-acre Student Sustainable Farm has been expanding to focus more on organic production and community involvement. The farm provides students with summer internships, hands-on experience in the production and management of a small organic farm, and experience in landscape architecture and environmental planning.
The SOFT Student Farm began in the spring of 2008 with a handful of students and faculty dedicated to creating a place for student exploration and leadership in agriculture. Students market produce from SOFT on campus.
The Sterling College Farm programs in vegetable production, livestock management and woodlot management support the courses in the Sustainable Agriculture major and in the Food Systems major, serves the College's dining hall, and offers general farming experience for agriculture students.
