Students, post-doctoral scholars, and others interested in performing surgery on rodents as part of a research protocol may not have had formal surgical training as part of their required coursework. 

The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).  

ACLAM recommends that all institutions that use animals in research, testing and training develop and implement written standards for performing surgical procedures on rodents.
