Test Number:

CO1 GAG Project Number:

2P-18

1. INTRODUCTION; A requirement has been stated by the USAP Special
Operations Pores (SOP) for a protective mask to be worn by crew members
- 0 * UC-123 aircraft while conducting aerial spray operations. Toxicity
QQof many apray agents dictate that protection be provided for the eyes,
face and respiratory system. The mask must be light, comfortable,
compatible with safety of flight and must not Interfere with performance
of crew duties. The M24 Protective Assembly will be evaluated to satisfy
this requirement.
2. DESCRIPTION; The M24 Assembly consists of:

a. The M24 Aircraft Protective Mask
(1) Small, PSN 4 4 - 0 - 7 9
208889
(2) Medium, PSN 4 4 - 7 - 3 4
207648
(3) Large, PSN 4 4 - 0 - 7 8
208889
b. M7 Protective Hood, PSN 4 4 - 2 - 6 5
200189
c. Ml Coupling Device, PSN 4240-300-6457
d. MS Oxygen Supply Adapters, PSN 4 4 - 4 - 0 4
208867
e. M10A1 Canisters, PSN 4 4 - 2 - 1 6
201778
The mask was designed for use by US Army aircrewmen during flight and
away from th* aircrax to provide respiratory protection against CB
agents. It has a clear plastic mono-lens and is compatible with flight
equipment. The mask utilises a hose-connected M10A1 canister and
incorporates an MU6 dynamic microphone to make it compatible with
radio systems in aircraft. The oxygen adapter permits use of this
mask with the aircraft oxygen system. The hood is made from butylcoated nylon cloth and provides head and neck protection when affixed
to the M24 mask. Operation and maintenance instructions are contained
in US Army Technical Manual TM3-4240-219-15.

3. PURPOSE: The objective of this project is to evaluate the comfort,
compatibility with flight safety and interference with crew duty performance of tb« M24 Protective Ateeably.
4. SCOPE; This project will encoapaee * •abjective in-uee evaluation
by Mabere of the AAOdth Coahat Crew Training Squadron while conducting
simulated aerial epray operat.ione.

The collection was donated to Special Collections of the National Agricultural Library in 1985 by Dr. Alvin L. Young (1942- ). Dr. Young developed the collection as he conducted extensive research on the military defoliant Agent Orange. The collection is in good condition and includes letters, memoranda, books, reports, press releases, journal and newspaper clippings, field logs and notebooks, newsletters, maps, booklets and pamphlets, photographs, memorabilia, and audiotapes of an interview with Dr. Young.</p>
