Cooperative agreements are in effect with many State Agricultural Experiment Stations, and with Government laboratories in Africa and Europe. Heavy losses in the livestock and poultry industries have been reduced through disease-control programs that use research data developed by this Division. Researchers at this laboratory conduct basic and applied research on hazardous livestock diseases that might be introduced into this country. Major research emphasis is on foot-and-mouth disease, a highly contagious and devastating disease of cattle. Research efforts are closely coordinated and jointly directed toward the primary objective of developing measures and techniques for preventing, controlling, and eradicating of highly communicable exotic animal diseases of potential danger to this country. High priority has been given to the study of foot-and-mouth disease, rinderpest, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, African swine fever, and African horsesickness. The laboratory emphasizes the importance of having equipment and facilities for the accurate diagnosis of these and other diseases. There is a biological reference center at the laboratory. EVERYBODY INVITED �More Winter Oats Needed for Grazing and for Harvesting As Grain DISPLAYING HOG MANAGEMENT Three phases of swine production will be stressed in a special swine car; breeding, feeding and swine sanitation. Three pens in one end of the car will have a good purebred boar, a grade sow and four good first cross shoats. Three pens on the other end will contain a pen of good hogs raised under sanitary conditions. Another pen will have some hogs the same age as the good ones, but produced under insanitary conditions. The middle pen will show in detail a sanitary production set-up. In the middle of the car a year-round succession of grazing crops for hogs in south Georgia will be shown. Figures will be given showing profit derived from improved practices. Hogs in south Georgia are fast becoming one of the major cash crops. Climatic and soil conditions are favorable for the production of crops on which hogs can be grazed the year round. That plan of production has proved most economical. Well Bred and Well Managed Farm Flocks Provide An Important Income on South Georgia Farms Page Five EVERYTHING FREE �One of the exhibits will contain common silage crops and comparative information about them. The general forage and feed crops exhibits contain many interesting plants and varieties, some of which are comparatively new in some sections. Further study of the exhibit will reveal a chart that shows crops that may be used in a continuous all-year grazing system. The soil improvement crop exhibit contains such familiar crops as Austrian winter peas, hairy vetch, runner peanuts and erotalaria and gives yields and results gotten from these crops at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station. CAN GEORGIA AFFORD? How long can Georgia afford to import more than half the meat consumed in the State and continue sending one cotton crop in every ten out of the State to buy work stock ? How long can the thin layer of topsoil that covers Georgia farms remain profitably productive with one-crop, careless farming making it poorer and poorer each year and soil erosion leaving it thinner and thinner? Live stock, balanced farming and soil improvement go hand in hand. The same crops that hold and improve the soil are generally the live stock feed crops. More and better live stock are destined to play a very increasingly important part in the progress of Georgia agriculture and the State generally. Interest has never been higher than during the last year or so. More and better pasture and more and better planning for an adequate supply of live stock feed must precede any sound live stock development program. A THREE-HORSE TEAM Live stock, pasture and soil improvement, thus, make us a three-horse team for any Georgia farmer who wants to work out a farming program that will provide better living for himself and family and leave the farm in as good or better shape for the children than it was when he took it over. It is to that three-horse team that this live stock development special train is dedicated. It is to help farmers particularly in south Georgia and the State generally to better appreciate and use this team that these special exhibits have been planned. SLOGAN Home grown feed, the pine tree, cow, hog and hen, Will make independent, South Georgia men. In any live stock program a supply of good feed is of prime importance. This feed must be produced and gotten to the animals at a reasonable cost. Experiments have shown that the cheapest feed is grown on land of high fertility and that it cost a great deal more to feed an animal in the dry lot than when the crops are harvested by the animals themselves. Abundant' Feed Crops Are Necessary for a Successful Live Stock Production EXPLAINING FORESTRY PRACTICES The forestry management and utilization exhibit shows principles of good forestry practices that enable landowners to increase their income from their forested lands giving market values of various forest products and the systematic management of forest lands to yield the products of quality that will bring the greatest returns. Pulp wood, naval stores, poles and piling, and sawlogs will be exhibited and their yields and values will be compared based on rotation period of years required to produce them. GIVING FEED CROP FACTS Live stock feed crops from test work at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station, together with their results in yield and feeding tests, will be highlights of the forage, feed and soil improvement car. Since these experiments were conducted at Tifton, the results are applicable to the greater number of soil types in south Georgia. Farmers interested in hay crops will find samples of hay from a large assortment of hay crops, together with analysis of the hay and other facts. Samples showing the different grades of good and bad hay will be on display. SHOWING IMPROVED BEEF CATTLE In a special beef cattle car you will see what a good, purebred beef bull can do when bred to a herd of ordinary native cattle. Records show that a calf sired by a good beef-type bull from a native or scrub cow will usually weigh at 12 months of age about 125 pounds more than a calf from the same cow and a scrub bull. The better calf will also sell for from 1% to 2 cents a pound more on the market. Live cattle, from the herd of the Coastal Plains Experiment Station, will be on the car and let you compare the difference with your own eyes. In addition to seeing a purebred bull and purebred and scrub cows with firstcross calves at their side, you will see three types of feeder steers, and exhibit showing how to identify and control the screw worm fly in live stock together with many practical suggestions about feeding and managing cattle. There will be an exhibit comparing the average Georgia hen with a high production hen at the College of Agriculture, showing the actual number of eggs laid by each. The National Poultry Improvement Plan will be featured with live baby chicks. Another exhibit will be entitled “Health Sticks to Clean Chicks.” Other displays will cover poultry equipment, poultry parasites, culling, feeds and feeding and the proper handling of market eggs. A demonstration to be given outside the car will be on culling and the selection of good breeding stock. Hens will be used to illustrate the different points to look for in good producers.
