Quartermaster Corps Front Royal Remount Station Photographs

The collection consists of 106 black and white photographs taken during winter of 1941 at the United States Army Remount Station in Front Royal, Virginia (operated by the Quartermaster Corps). The photographs are captioned and illustrate the process by which the Army cared for and trained animals toward the end of the era of the United States Army Remount Service.

Weighing foals

Description: Painstaking care produces results. All foals are weighed regularly: at birth, three months, six months and then every six months until four years of age, at which time they are shipped to the mounted service schools.

Use of manure

Description: All manure except that which is diseased (infected) is placed on spreaders similar to this and spread over designated pastures.

Transporting forage

Description: Forage is usually transported to the Depot on trucks. A bale of hay from each load is opened and carefully inspected by a Veterinary Officer.

Testing fecal specimen

Description: All experiments carried on at the Veterinary Laboratory are supervised by trained technicians. A fecal specimen obtained from each horse arriving at the Depot is tested for parasites.
