Objective
  1. Develop a culture method for the improved isolation and detection of Yersinia enterocolitica from foods.
  2. Evaluate and implement the newly developed method for the isolation and identification of Y. enterocolitica in food samples.

Expected Benefits:
  1. An improved method for the isolation and identification of virulent Y. enterocolitica in foods.
  2. Validated methods will be used at Laboratory Services Division of the University of Guelph, shared with the Public Health Agency of Canada, and other laboratories for routine testing of food samples submitted in sporadic and outbreak cases, and to conduct risk assessment studies and epidemiological studies.
  3. Validated method will be used to support OMAFRA's food safety program involving detection and identification of Yersinia enterocolitica in Foods.
