Start date
2009
End date
2010
Objective
The objective of this project is to develop a series of resources for National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps (NAHERC) members who potentially would respond to avian disease outbreaks. A comprehensive set of resources will be developed for avian species. The facility manual will be developed for each of six poultry industry sectors. Subject matter experts for each sector will be responsible for drafting the information for each industry sector. Broiler Chickens: Sue Watkins, University of Arkansas Egg Layer Chickens: Darrell Trampel, Iowa State University; Tim Clouse and Sasidhar Malladi (CEAH, Ft. Collins) Turkeys: John Barnes and Mike Martin, North Carolina State University Backyard Poultry: Larry Allen, State of California Upland Gamebirds: Eva Wallner-Pendleton, Michael Hulet, Penn State University Live bird markets: APHIS to identify experts
More information
NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: These materials will benefit Iowa State University and the State of Iowa. A trained NAHERC is essential for a rapid and effective response to an animal disease emergency and will help to protect the agricultural economy, food supply, and public health. The State of Iowa leads the nation in the production of eggs and has a significant avian population. These materials could be used to prepare and train the Iowa Veterinary Rapid Response Team and teams in other states to assist in the event of an animal emergency in Iowa and could be used as just in time training.

APPROACH: For each sector of the industry, the facility manual will include information on the production industry, the facility types, movement and transportation cycles, and support industries. The facility manuals will include specific biosecurity measures that should be implemented to prevent or mitigate the spread of a high consequence disease such as avian influenza. Information on response to other highly contagious diseases and the approach to compartmentalization to meet OIE guidelines will be included. In addition, information on how to plan for and implement care of animals if transportation systems are disrupted will be included. Input from industry associations and other stakeholders will be incorporated.
