Objective
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is of major importance as a foodborne pathogen. Competition for essential metals (such as iron) is a crucial determinant of its pathogenicity. However, there is growing support for a model in which sudden exposure to redox active metals, accompanied by a sudden deadly change in the nature of reactive oxygen species, contributes to the killing of this pathogen in late endosomes. This project will test the model.
