In the present study, we analyzed the virulence and survival genes, antimicrobial resistance, and the clonal distribution of 50 C. jejuni isolates obtained from various sources in 14 chicken slaughterhouses across 8 provinces in South Korea from 2019 to 2022.

    • In December 2019, four children of the same school were hospitalized due to severe diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, and the mother of one child was diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Escherichia coli O157 NM was isolated from the stool of one child, whereas Campylobacter jejuni isolates were found in feces, raw foods, environmental samples, and tap water.

    • Campylobacter is well recognized as the leading cause of bacterial foodborne diarrheal disease worldwide with a very low outbreak reported in China. In May 2019, we investigated an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni infections among students in a junior high school in Eastern China. Cases were interviewed to identify a common source of contamination. As cases were identified in the same school during a period of time, menus were reviewed and food items included in the questionnaire.

  17. Comparative Genomic Analysis of a Multidrug-Resistant Campylobacter jejuni Strain YH002 Isolated from Retail Beef Liver

In this study, we report the comparative genomic and functional characteristics of C. jejuni YH002 recently isolated from retail beef liver. Whole-genome sequencing and annotation of the strain revealed novel genetic features, including an integrated intact phage element, multiple antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, virulence factors, and a Phd-Doc type toxin–antitoxin (TA) system.

A total of 537 fecal samples from adult beef cattle (n = 435) and rectal swabs from calves (n = 102) were screened for Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, and Campylobacter upsaliensis by culture and polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, 86 Campylobacter spp. isolates including 46 C. jejuni, 24 C. coli, and 16 C.
