  1. Determining how gavaging laying hens with lead (Pb) effects lead concentration in table eggs, bone, blood, and liver

    • Previous research has demonstrated that lead (Pb2+, for the remainder of the paper referred to as Pb) and other heavy metals are present in table eggs from backyard birds. While the source of Pb exposure is unknown, exposure to the environment via the foraging behavior of backyard poultry is likely a significant factor.

  2. Investigation of pesticide residues in Fragaria and Myrica rubra sold in Hangzhou

    • This study investigated the concentration of the pesticide residues found in Fragaria and Myrica rubra sold in the city of Hangzhou. From an analysis of 151 (77 Fragaria and 74 Myrica rubra ) samples using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), a total of 41 different pesticide residues were found to be present. Of the 41 residues, 14 were found using GC-MS/MS and 27 using LC-MS/MS.

  3. Prevalence and Characterization of Quinolone Resistance in Campylobacter spp. Isolates in Chicken Livers from Retail Stores in Georgia, USA

    • Campylobacter is the leading bacterial pathogen that causes human foodborne illnesses worldwide and outbreaks have been associated with consumption of under-cooked chicken livers.  The objectives of this study were to compare two PCR assays for speciation of 250 Campylobacter isolates, to assess antibiotic resistance of the isolates, and to analyze genetic diversity of the quinolone resistance determining regions (QRDR) of the isolates.

  4. Persistent Organic Pollutants in Human Milk: Exposure Levels and Determinants among Lactating mothers in Lebanon

The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of POPs in the human milk collected from lactating mothers in Lebanon and investigate the socio-demographic, nutritional, and other lifestyle determinants. Fifty-four breast milk samples were collected as per WHO guidelines. A survey was used to assess the anthropometric and demographic characteristics of participants.

  5. Risk assessment of pesticide residues in Chinese litchis

    • The presence of pesticide residues in fruit has been of extensive concern worldwide. In this paper, pesticide residues in litchi samples in China and their dietary exposure risks were evaluated. Fifty-seven pesticides in 150 litchi samples were measured by GC and UPLC/MS-MS. Seventeen different pesticides were detected and 70.7% of samples contained one or more pesticide residues.

  7. Concentrations and related health risk assessment of pesticides, phthalates and heavy metals in strawberry from Shanghai, China

    • The inhibition kinetics of glutathione (GSH) and quercetin on Acrylamide (AA) formation in the low-moisture Maillard systems were investigated at 180 °C. The inhibition rates in an equal-molar asparagine/glucose (Asn/Glc) system was higher than those in asparagine/fructose (Asn/Fru) system, and the maximum inhibition rates for AA were 57.75% with GSH of 10 -2 mol L -1 and 51.38% with quercetin of 10 -1 mol L -1 .

  21. Pilot monitoring of antimicrobial residues in chicken and pork in Viet Nam

    • Antibiotic residues in consumer foods pose a threat to human health and contribute to increasing antimicrobial resistance. The study was conducted from January to July 2019 in six provinces in Viet Nam. In total, 360 pork samples and 360 chicken meat samples were collected for analysis. The samples were first screened with an ELISA test kit for residues in the beta-lactam, tetracycline and sulfonamide groups.
