  1. Occurrence of Multi-Drug-Resistant Escherichia coli in Chickens, Humans, Rodents and Household Soil in Karatu, Northern Tanzania

    • We investigated antibiotic resistance profiles of Escherichia coli among 960 samples obtained from chickens (236), humans (243), rodents (101) and soil (290). E. coli was isolated from 650 (67.7%) samples. Isolation frequency varied significantly between chickens, humans, rodents and soil samples, being 81.6%, 86.5%, 79.2% and 31.0%, respectively (p < 0.001).

Genomic analysis of strain 2P24 revealed the presence of a complete SPI-1 type III secretion system (T3SS) gene cluster on the chromosome with an organization and orientation similar to the SPI-1 T3SS gene clusters of Salmonella enterica and P. kilonensis F113.

In this study, an easy and rapid recombinase aided amplification assay (RAA) for blaKPC was established. This protocol could be completed at 39°C in 15–20 min.

  18. Whole Genome Sequence of Alternaria alternata, the Causal Agent of Black Spot of Kiwifruit

    • Alternaria alternata is a pathogen in a wide range of agriculture crops and causes significant economic losses. A strain of A. alternata (Y784-BC03) was isolated and identified from “Hongyang” kiwifruit and demonstrated to cause black spot infections on fruits. The genome sequence of Y784-BC03 was obtained using Nanopore MinION technology. The assembled genome is composed of 33,869,130bp (32.30Mb) comprising 10 chromosomes and 11,954 genes.
