Research Publications (Food Safety)

This page tracks research articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Recent articles are available ahead of print and searchable by Journal, Article Title, and Category. Research publications are tracked across six categories: Bacterial Pathogens, Chemical Contaminants, Natural Toxins, Parasites, Produce Safety, and Viruses. Articles produced by USDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) and FDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) are also tracked in Scopus.

  1. Improved pathology reporting in NAFLD/NASH for clinical trials

    • Journal of Clinical Pathology
    • Introduction Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a disorder characterised by pathological accumulation of non-visible free fatty acids and visible triglyceride in hepatocytes, is on the rise globally in both adult and paediatric populations.1 Evidence suggests that 20%–50% of the European Union and US populations exhibit features of NAFLD,2 driven by higher rates of obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.3 Additionally, recognition of a growi

  2. Sinusoidal dilatation and congestion in post-transplant liver biopsies from patients presenting with transaminitis

    • Journal of Clinical Pathology
    • Aims

Sinusoidal dilatation and congestion (SDC) in liver biopsy may be obstructive (due to venous outflow impairment) or non-obstructive in nature. The significance of this finding in the post-liver transplant setting remains unexplored.

      Methods

We herein retrospectively analysed all post-transplant liver biopsies showing SDC and examined histopathological features in detail. Association with transaminitis and concurrent graft rejection was assessed.

  3. Viropathic multinuclear syncytial giant cells in bronchial fluid from a patient with COVID-19

    • Journal of Clinical Pathology
    • Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pneumonia has emerged as major global health threat as it continues to spread with increasing number of deaths. COVID-19 is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA coronavirus that is largely transmitted by inhalation of respiratory droplets.

  4. De novo haemoglobin sabine masquerading as double heterozygosity for HbQ-India and {beta}-thalassemia trait: first report from South Asia

    • Journal of Clinical Pathology
    • Unstable haemoglobinopathies are rare autosomal dominant disorders that lead to haemolytic anaemia with varied severity. Structural defects in globin chains result in instability of the haemoglobin (Hb) tetramer with decreased solubility and intraerythrocytic precipitation (Heinz bodies). Clinically, unstable Hbs may remain undiagnosed either due to asymptomatic/milder phenotypes or may be misdiagnosed due to masquerading of other phenotypes.
