Research Publications (Food Safety)

This page tracks research articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Recent articles are available ahead of print and searchable by Journal, Article Title, and Category. Research publications are tracked across six categories: Bacterial Pathogens, Chemical Contaminants, Natural Toxins, Parasites, Produce Safety, and Viruses. Articles produced by USDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) and FDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) are also tracked in Scopus.

  1. Activation of PrfA results in overexpression of virulent factors but does not rescue the pathogenicity of Listeria monocytogenes M7 [STANDARD]

    • Journal of Medical Microbiology
    • Listeria monocytogenes encodes a transcriptional activator PrfA to positively regulate the expression of virulence factors. We describe a strain M7 containing a PrfA*(G145S) that activates expression of virulence factors but with low pathogenicity. To uncover this contradictory relationship, we exchanged the prfA genes between strains EGDe and M7 (designated as EGDe-prfAM7 and M7-prfAEGDe).

  2. Epidemiology of domestically-acquired hepatitis E virus infection in Japan: assessment of the nationally reported surveillance data, 2007-2013 [STANDARD]

    • Journal of Medical Microbiology
    • In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reported hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections from developed countries. To describe recent trends in notification and potential risk groups and risk factors in Japan, HEV infection cases and demographic, food consumption, clinical and laboratory data reported during 2007-2013 were analyzed. A total of 530 HEV infections was reported during 2007-2013.

  3. Aetiology of acute paediatric gastroenteritis in Bulgaria during summer months: prevalence of the viral infections [STANDARD]

    • Journal of Medical Microbiology
    • Paediatric acute gastroenteritis is a global public health problem.Comprehensive laboratory investigation for viral, bacterial and parasitic agents is helpful for improving management of acute gastroenteritis in health care settings and for monitoring and controlling the spread of these infections. Our study aimed to investigate the role of various pathogens in infantile diarrhoea in Bulgaria outside the classical winter epidemics of rotavirus and norovirus.Stool samples from 115 hospitalized

  4. Mouse models for assessing the cross-protective efficacy of oral non-typhoidal Salmonella vaccine candidates harboring in-frame deletions of the ATP-dependent protease lon and other genes [STANDARD]

    • Journal of Medical Microbiology
    • In BALB/c mouse models of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) infection, a single oral immunization with a mutant strain with an insertion of the chloramphenicol resistance gene into the ATP-dependent protease clpP or lon gene decreased the number of salmonellae in each tissue sample five days after oral challenge with virulent S. Typhimurium at weeks 26 and 54 postimmunization. These data suggest that an oral immunization with the ClpP- or Lon-disrupted S.
