      Latex agglutination tests (LAT) were developed and evaluated for the rapid detection of LPS antibodies against E. coli serogroup O157, O26, O104, O111 and O145. The latex tests have been proved to be sensitive, fast, easy-to-perform and cost-efficient tools for the screening serodiagnosis of VTEC infections causing haemolytic-uraemic syndrome.

      LacZ (β-galactosidase) is used to monitor the transcription of genes in reporter strains carrying the lacZ gene under the control of a promotor of interest. This protocol for LacZ activity determinations in Vibrio cholerae following detergent lysis results in 2.5-fold increase of LacZ activities compared to lysis with chloroform.

      Genotype 2 M. haemolytica predominantly associate over genotype 1 with the lungs of cattle with respiratory disease and ICEs containing antimicrobial resistance genes. Distinct protein masses were detected by MALDI-TOF MS between genotype 1 and 2 strains. MALDI-TOF MS could rapidly differentiate genotype 2 strains in veterinary diagnostic laboratories.

      Three qPCR assays targeting the locus of heat resistance to identify heat resistant clinical Escherichia coli isolates are described. Of 613 isolates, 3 (0.5%) possessed the locus. The assays are a rapid, highly sensitive and specific alternative to screening by heat shock and can be used in food safety surveillance.
