The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Applied Science (AAS) degree program “includes technical training in food production, student-driven research, and co-creation of community engagement initiatives. Hands-on, experiential, transdisciplinary learning is emphasized through student engagement in the campus gardens and food system where students participate in developing food sovereignty strategies that can be trialed and learned from.”
The Dartmouth Organic Farm, a certified-organic, student-run educational and working farm, provides opportunities for student and faculty research, labs and courses, internships, and independent projects, and includes hands-on experience in sustainable food, organic production, renewable energy, beekeeping, and aquaponics.
The University of Georgia farmland includes more than six acres of certified organic production area with field plots and a greenhouse at the Durham Horticulture Farm in Watkinsville, and provides students in the Certificate Program in Organic Agriculture with hands-on learning opportunities.
Cornell University manages research farms, orchards, greenhouses, and other facilities dedicated to sustainable agriculture and to organic research. Research programs focus on: organic vegetable production; weed and crop management, organic production systems and breeding and variety testing; organic grain trials; pest management; vegetable pest and crop management systems; organic greenhouse production; organic grape production; and organic apple production.
"The Organic Farmer Training Program is a nine-month intensive training program in year-round organic farming focusing on diversified production of vegetables, livestock, flowers, fruits and herbs for local markets." Program includes management of "15 acre certified organic farm including its 20,000 square foot of passive solar greenhouse space and the Student Organic Farm for its primary markets including a 48-week CSA, 7-month on campus farm stand, and sales to campus dinning services."
The Richard Alsina Fulton Center for Sustainability Studies facilitates practical training and research and is used to demonstrate sustainable methods of soil improvement, weed and pest control, cover and biointensive cropping, rotation, use of compost and green manures, and alternative fuel research. The Center includes the Fulton Farm, a USDA-certified 50-acre farmstead, passive-solar greenhouses, solar and wind-generated electricity demonstrations, and a Community Supported Agriculture program. Previously called the Fulton Center for Sustainable Living.
Part of the Southern Illinois University Farms system, the Sustainability Center is comprised of the student-run Sustainable Farm and Greenhouse, a Vermicomposting Center, and the Paper Recycling Project. Research and work-study opportunities are available. The farm operates a seasonal CSA, markets produce locally, and provides organic vegetables to the Southern Illinois University dining halls.
The College of the Extended University at Cal Poly partnered with Archi's Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (AISA), also know as Archi's Acres to offer a six-week Sustainable Agriculture Training (SAT) certificate program. Upon completion, students also earn 12-semester units of academic credit at Cal Poly State Polytechnic University - Pomona.
The school emphasizes organic production methods and direct marketing. Its intensive three-day course provides a "realistic picture of what it takes to run a successful small-scale produce operation." Topics covered include: business and marketing, soil fertility, crop production, pest and disease management, equipment and labor needs.
