The Farmer Training Program is a 6-month intensive program for aspiring farmers and food systems advocates that provides a hands-on, skill-based education in sustainable agriculture, organic crop production, marketing, farm business management, and more. Participants manage their own growing site, take classes from professors and expert farmers, and rotate as workers and learners on successful, diverse farms in the Burlington, VT area.
The Food Systems curriculum integrates social science, humanities and natural science. The program "prepares students to address some of the most challenging problems of contemporary food systems, such as building climate change resilience, reducing waste across the supply chain and exploring equitable distribution and fair labor practices."
Educational opportunities and events at the Middlebury College Organic Farm and Food Project are open to students, staff, faculty and community members.
The Sterling College Farm programs in vegetable production, livestock management and woodlot management support the courses in the Sustainable Agriculture major and in the Food Systems major, serve the College's dining hall, and offer general farming experience for agriculture students.
