Acceptability of UK Permitted Food Additives for Special and Religious Diets

Objective

Each religious and dietary group has particular requirements governing the foods and combinations of foods which may be consumed by members. The overall objective of the project is to produce a comprehensive report listing the acceptability of current food additives for the various diets. The report will provide quick reference tables as well as justification for the acceptability or unacceptability of additives for the religious and special dietary groups. The information will be gathered using published sources and information including specialist religious food guides and other advice obtained direct from the religious and dietary associations.

There is a need to establish the sources of additives in order to aid provision of advice to consumers. Particular emphasis will be placed on how suitable additives are in special and religious diets. The research will focus on the dietary requirements of the key religious groups in the UK namely Jewish (Kosher), Muslim (Halal) and Hindu, together with ethical groups including lactoovovegetarians and vegans.
