Analysis of Salmonella Pre-Harvest Control Strategies for Domestic and International Markets

Objective

To provide the National Pork Board with a comprehensive, up-to-date, description of national control programs for pre-harvest Salmonella used by major pork exporting nations and US pork trading partners, and measures of impact of such programs on Salmonella prevalence on-farm.

More information

Non-Technical Summary:
To provide the National Pork Board with a comprehensive, up-to-date, description of national control programs for pre-harvest Salmonella used by major pork exporting nations and US pork trading partners, and measures of impact of such programs on Salmonella prevalence on-farm.
Approach:
Deliverable 1: A description of the components of national (mandated) approaches to pre-harvest control in major pork-exporting counties. Anticipated sources of information: This information will be based on government programs that describe control programs. Sources of information will likely be regulatory agencies in charge on administering such programs or industry groups with similar role as the National Pork Board. Deliverable 2: A description of the components of the national (mandated) approaches to pre-harvest control in major importers of US pork products. Anticipated sources of information: This information is based on government programs that describe control programs. Sources of information will likely be regulator agencies in charge on administering such programs or industry groups with similar role as the National Pork Board. Deliverable 3: A description of estimates of the prevalence of Salmonella pre-harvest in the United States, including estimates of the proportion of positive Salmonella positive farms and estimates of the distribution of the prevalence of Salmonella within farms. Anticipated sources of data. Given the time frame and other tasks involved in the review it is not anticipated that the white paper will conduct a comprehensive review of prevalence estimates worldwide. Rather the project will previously published reviews that have already been compiled recently such as Fosse et al (2009) and Sanchez et al (2007) and the National Animal Health Monitoring Scheme 2006 Salmonella survey. Deliverable 4: A summary of estimates of efficacy of "national" control measures designed to reduce Salmonella pre-harvest. Deliverable 5: A summary of evidence for the efficacy of components of on-farm Salmonella control programs. The method of summary will be consistent the GRADE Summary of Findings Table. Sources of information: The interventions will include 1) sanitation, 2) biosecurity, 3) feed composition, 4) vaccination and 5) antibiotics. 1st we will conduct a search for systematic reviews of these topics, if these are available, these will be used. If the review is old (> 5 years) , a search for new data will be conducted since the review was conducted. The sources on information will be PUBMED, CAB, Agricola and a hand search of the Safe-Pork conference since the review was conducted. For areas where a review was not identified, a comprehensive search will be conducted, the literature screening, data extracted, and data summarized. These data will be presented to the panel members at a meeting to reach a conclusion about the efficacy of components of on-farm Salmonella programs. The method used to reach a conclusion will be the GRADE system
