Animal Welfare Indicators for Precision-Bred Cattle, Sheep and Turkeys - AW0524

Objective

1. Engage stakeholders (breeding companies, welfare assessment schemes, welfare scientists) to determine what health, production, and welfare data are currently collected, who collects it, and opportunities for additional data collection. 2.1 Create species-specific welfare indicator lists for beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, and turkeys using the Five Domains model. Assessments have three levels: basic, comprehensive and enhanced. 2.2 Estimate sample sizes required. A deterministic modelling approach was used to estimate the number of animals required to detect a difference between precision-bred and baseline populations for each species. 2.3 Estimate time and costs of carrying out welfare assessments.
