<p>Project 1 - Integrated Management Strategies for Scab in Illinois:
The objectives of the proposed study are:
<li>demonstrate that integrated management is the most effective and economical means of reducing losses to FHB/ DON; and</li>
<li>increase grower adoption of integrated strategies to control FHB.</li></ol>
Project 2 - Uniform Fungicide Tests for Control of Fusarium Head Blight in Illinois: The goal of this study is to test the efficacy of fungicides across multiple locations in Illinois for their effects on Fusarium head blight (FH B) control and their ability to reduce deoxynivalenol (DON) levels in harvested soft red winter wheat grain.
<br>Project 3 - Management of Scab-Associated Mycotoxins in Wheat Straw:
<li>identify and determine the levels of F. graminearum-associated mycotoxins present in wheat straw from Fusarium head blight (FHB) field research trials in Illinois, and</li>
<li>determine the effect of FHB host resistance and foliar fungicide on the level of mycotoxins in wheat straw.</li></ol></p>
Project 1: Trials will be conducted at three locations at university research farms in Illinois (Urbana and Dixon Springs). The effects of fungicide application timing and wheat cultivar (cultivars ranging in susceptibility to FHB) will be evaluated for their effects on FHB and deoxynivalenol (DON) levels in harvested grain in F. graminearum-inoculated and non-inoculated areas. Project 2: Trials will be initiated at two locations at university research farms in Illinois. At each location, the effects of previous crop (soybean or corn), fungicide, and wheat cultivar (cultivars ranging in susceptibility to FHB) will be evaluated for their effects on FHB and deoxynivalenol (DON) levels in harvested grain. Project 3: Wheat straw samples will be collected from field research trials located at four different locations and from three different FHB management research trialsacross Illinois. Wheat straw samples (stems only) will be collected from each plot (minimum of 3 replications per treatment) of these studies immediately after harvest by cutting and collecting the standing stems in the plots. In addition to wheat straw samples being collected, harvested grain samples also will be collected from the same plots and analyzed for mycotoxins.
