The primary goal of the research is to develop superior barley varieties for Montana farmers. The milestone for success will be released varieties that are widely grown in Montana, and used by maltsters, brewers, the food industry, and the livestock industry in Montana and throughout the world. An additional goal is to contribute to the literature regarding barley breeding and genetics . During the life of this proposal we intend to create publications on genetic dissection of malt quality, forage quality and root archetecture; management of low protein lines; and malt process papers. The milestone to be achieved for this goal will be refereed papers published in international journals.
