This project will conduct testing on bovine brain tissue for the detection of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).

Non-Technical Summary: The Califonria Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory will serve as front-line surveillance for the appearance of BSE in the food supply in California. The Califonria Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory has contracted with the USDA/APHIS to conduct testing on bovine brain tissue for the detection of BSE. <P> Approach: The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory has been approved by the USDA to conduct BSE testing using the BioRad ELISA test and NSP robot, which are located on the Davis campus. USDA has set-up an on-line reporting mechanism for this surveillance program.
