BRANDT FORUM 2022 AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE-BASED POLICY: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR US AGRICULTURE AND THE ENV

Objective

We will raise alternative explanations for policy choices, includingPolitical economy and political power affect the distribution of benefits and costs.The desire of incumbent governments to establish irreversible outcomes given political uncertainty sets facts on the ground.Uncertainty and credit constraints constrain the establishment of new industries and supply chains.Overview of WorkshopThe workshop will include two main strands of engagement across government, private, and public sector participants:The first strand will focus on the implications of science-based policy on the US economy's competitiveness and sustainability.The second will discuss the dynamics of science-based policy and how it can support innovation.The workshop commences with a series of speakers during a morning session followed by breakout groups discussing developing a dynamic policy and ensuring efficiency, access, diversity, and inclusion. Following the afternoon breakout sessions, the group will reconvene, distill the overarching themes and discuss strategies and approaches to addressing these themes.The event's outcome will be a white paper highlighting the discussion, the lessons learned, and the future challenges to science-based policy development. We will record the event and transcribed it, making it easier to put into workshop proceedings. A facilitator will keep the group on track to outline future research needs at the intersection of technology and agricultural markets.
