CHARACTERIZATION OF SHIGA TOXIN-PRODUCING E. COLI IN PIGS IN ILLINOIS

Objective

To evaluate the role of pigs in human STEC infection and to ensure safety of pork products from the state of Illinois, we propose to collect a large volume of samples year-round at two slaughter facilities which process pigs statewide to thoroughly examine the prevalence of STEC in healthy finisher pigs from Illinois and to evaluate transmission dynamics of STEC in pigs over seasons. Results from this research will determine the presence of Stx-positive E. coli in Illinois finisher pigs and potentially help the swine industry to develop management strategies to minimize the risk of STEC-associated outbreak associated with pork products.
