Development of a Prebiotic Intervention to Reduce Carriage of Zoonotic Pathogens of Swine During on-Farm Rearing and Entering the Abattoir

Objective

Determine the inhibitory concentration of thymol-beta-D-glucopyranoside (called beta-D-thymol) needed to achieve efficacious reductions of Campylobacter coli, Salmonella spp., and E. coli in laboratory and animal feeding studies.

Evaluate the potential of beta-D-thymol to co-select for antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter coli, Salmonella spp., and generic E. coli or to make resistant strains of these bacteria more sensitive to antibiotics when grown in mixed populations of porcine gut bacteria.

More information

A series of laboratory and live animal studies will be conducted to test the effects of a novel antimicrobial compound, thymol-beta-D-glucopyranoside, on the survivability and antimicrobial susceptibility of zoonotic pathogens.
