Modulation of Dosing Regimes to Prevent Development of Fluoroquinolone Resistance in Bacteria (Mainly Salmonella and E. Coli) in Chicken

Objective

Investigate different dosing regimes of enrofloxacin and possibly difloxacin in chickens on the development of resistance in Salmonella and E. coli in the first instance and possibly in Campylobacter and Mycoplasma.

Determine fluoroquinolone concentrations in poultry serum and tissues during dosing and relate this to a mutant prevention concentration

Investigate quinolone concentrations and resistance in faecal flora from treated animals and analyse any resulting mutants.

Use evidence from 1 to 3 to provide advice on strategies to minimise the development of resistance in poultry dosed with quinolones.
