Objective

To determine the cellular and subcellular sites of replication of scrapie agent in the tongue of sheep.

APPROACH: Experimentally expose sheep to scrapie. Collect tongue tissues from scrapie-exposed sheep. Determine cellular localization of the scrapie agent in the tongue in order to ascertain its distribution in the lymphoreticular and nervous systems as well as in skeletal muscle and taste cells.
