This research project is a literature review study to investigate the incidence of campylobacter in poultry other than chicken, at retail.
Also the degree of overlap of human campylobacter subtypes with subtypes found in poultry other than chicken.
<p>A literature review of published and unpublished data worldwide on the prevalence of campylobacter in poultry (other than chicken). This will include incidence in the slaughterhouse and at retail.
<p>The degree of overlap between subtypes identified in poultry sources in the literature and common human subtypes identified in case control/outbreak data held by the Health Protection Agency, will be assessed and used to prepare a risk assessment of the occurrence of human campylobacteriosis.
This will be compared with existing risk assessments for human campylobacteriosis associated with chicken meat.
Poultry is thought to be a major source of campylobacters. Campylobacter infection is the most common cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis in the UK.
However, most studies have investigated the incidence of contamination in chicken only.
<p>There is therefore a need to consider other poultry. such as turkey, goose, duck, quail, guinea fowl and game birds, as consumption of these birds is increasing in the UK.
