Excerpt
The third edition of Rackham's Poultry Directory is presented to the fraternity with the feeling that it is even more accurate than the previous editions. Yet there still remains room for improvement and we are ever ready to follow any suggestions that will add to its value. A directory of any kind is one of those things which, when worthy of the name, should find a hearty welcome on all sides. It is as advantageous to the seller as to the buyer, and in the case of a Poultry Directory, fills a long-felt want. No pains or expense have been spared to make it just what it should be —a directory in fact as well as in name.
A few so-called Poultry Directories are now in existence, but all are unreliable, inaccurate and incomplete in the extreme. They have proved more injurious than useful, being mere advertising schemes, hippodroming the word directory.
This, the third annual edition of Rackham's Poultry Directory, is a marked improvement upon the first. Many of its features are new and original; nothing like it has heretofore been attempted and it represents years of earnest work, devoted to the collection and classification of valuable information. Its pages have been compiled with the utmost care, and the correctness of the facts verified by personal letters. Everything has been done to insure the accuracy of the information it is intended to impart, and the work has been revised and corrected to the very moment of going to press. It is a faithful guide in every way, and a glance at its pages will convince the most skeptical of the thoroughness and convenience of its make-up.
A comprehensive work of this nature must become a book of perpetual reference for all progressive, pushing men of the world who appreciate good things, and have a proper understanding of the requirements of successful business. It is a well-known fact that no organ exists which brings the buyer and seller in closer and more harmonious contact at just the right time, than a trade directory.
The ALPHABETICAL LIST follows the general style of an ordinary directory.
NEWSPAPER ROW contains a long list, not only of the poultry papers, but also of those journals that devote more or less space to poultry, and should assist in bringing the breeder in contact with the backbone of all industries—the PRESS.
The SUPPLY DIRECTORY with its hundred headings carefully arranged, and covering every point of interest to breeders, should be invaluable to amateurs, as well as a frequent source of reference to all interested in poultry.
The BREED DIRECTORY is a complete and wonderful piece of work, and with its two hundred classified headings, cannot be otherwise than a benefit to the fraternity. It is daily consulted by amateurs and by the best breeders of the country, being a ready reference in the most acceptable form.
From the foregoing, it is plain that Rackham's Poultry Directory, as a whole, is a full and perfect guide to the poultry industry. While asserting, without fear of contradiction, that this book is reliable and complete, it is not claimed that it is entirely free from typographical or other errors and omissions; we do not claim that which is not of this vale of tears — absolute perfection. In a work of this magnitude, wherein over half a million type has been used and which has required the exchange of thousands of letters, a claim of PERFECTION would be as absurd as false.
With the hope that our work will be appreciated, and that it will prove as useful as expected, we request our friends to notify us of any errors or omissions and to freely suggest any changes that will add to the value of Rackham's Poultry Directory.
