The Farm is an educational laboratory for students in the Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) program and serves as a model of sustainable regional agriculture. Experiential learning opportunities are offered in livestock, organic field and forage crops, and organic horticultural production, as well as value-added processing and marketing. The College's Agriculture and Natural Resources (B.S.) degree includes courses in sustainable agricultural practices, and bees and beekeeping.

The Organic Farming Research and Education Unit (OFREU), a 20-acre USDA-certified organic farm and research facility, is available for organic vegetable production, the student community supported agriculture program, Sustainable Agriculture Program (SAG) student apprenticeships, teaching resources and courses for the SAG curriculum, and faculty and student research in sustainable organic horticultural production systems. OFREU also serves as a venue for labs and hands-on learning.

The KSU Research and Demonstration Farm is a 300-acre farm that "offers students opportunities to conduct research and demonstration projects related to sustainable agriculture, livestock production, horticulture, bioenergy and other land-based studies. The farm includes 11 acres of certified organic land." Organic agriculture research at the university campus takes place in the Atwood Research Facility.

Kentucky State University offers opportunities for undergraduates and graduates students to study and conduct research in organic and sustainable agriculture through its College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems. Courses cover agroecology, alternative energy, organic livestock production, organic and sustainable plant production systems, sustainable pest management, and urban agriculture.
