Growth and Salmonella Dissemination in Pigs given Probiotics in their Diet

Objective

The objective of this cooperative research project is to evaluate the extent of dissemination of Salmonella from gastrointestinal lumen to regional lymph nodes within 3 hours of inoculation.

More information

Nine pigs will be fed probiotics. Rectal swabs will be taken every 3 to 4 days after inoculation. On day 17, all 12 pigs will be inoculated (intranasal) with Salmonella typhimurium 3 hours prior to necropsy. Space allocations will be maintained as per ACUC guidelines. Histopathology and microbiological evaluations will be performed after necropsy.
