The overarching goal of the proposed work is to define zoonotic pathways that introduce Salmonella into surface water, identify accurate environmental and climate predictors of Salmonella presence in water, and reveal the genetic mechanisms that govern Salmonella persistence in water. Objectives:Identify environmental factors that promote movement of Salmonella from a livestock operation to surface water.Attribute clinically important Salmonella serotypes isolated from surface waters across the United States to zoonotic sources.Reveal genes responsible for Salmonella persistence in water, and correlate climate, water properties, and serotype with Salmonella transmission in water.
