  1. Effects of Storage Temperature and Spices Incorporation on the Stability and Antibacterial Properties of Fontitrygon margarita (Günther, 1870) Liver Oil

    • Fontitrygon margarita liver oil, rich in unsaturated fatty acids, is susceptible to oxidation during storage, which can diminish its antibacterial qualities. This study examines the effects of storage temperature and the addition of spices on the stability and antibacterial properties of F. margarita liver oil. Oils with added spices were stored in opaque bottles at room temperature (28 ± 2°C) and in a refrigerator (4°C) and were periodically analyzed over a six‐month period.

    • Atlantic menhaden are a highly migratory marine species in the Eastern United States that suffer from seasonal chronic mortality. Affected fish show neurologic signs referred to as spinning disease, including circling at the surface and erratic corkscrew swimming before death. We investigated three similar menhaden mortality events consistent with spinning disease in coastal New Jersey and New York between 2020 and 2021 to understand the cause.

  3. Effects of Dietary Supplement of Basil Extract on Biochemical and Immunological Parameters and Growth Performance in Oncorhynchus mykiss

    • Ocimum basilicum has antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of O. basilicum extract on growth yield, safety, and marinating physiologic functions of the rainbow trout. The fish were fed with food rations containing 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% of basil extract. Basil extract, especially at 1% concentration food ration, significantly increased the growth parameters compared with the control group (p < 0.05).

    • The current research investigated the effects of pot marigold (Calendula officinalis) powder on growth, biochemical parameters, digestive enzymes, serum and mucus immune responses, antioxidant defense, and resistance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against Yersinia ruckeri. Fish (No. 450, 15.06 ± 0.11 g; mean ± SE) were randomly distributed to five groups fed with a diet containing 0 (control group), 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% of pot marigold powder (MP) for 60 days.

  5. Design and Optimization of a yst-PCR to Detect Yersinia enterocolitica in Meat Food

    • In this study, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) directed to the yst chromosomal gene (yst-PCR) was used as a rapid, sensitive, and specific method to detect Yersinia enterocolitica strains belonging to different biotypes in foods; a competitive Internal Amplification Control (cIAC) is also developed. The cIAC had a molecular weight of 417 bp and was detected until a concentration of 0.85 ng/μL.

  11. Improvement of the EN ISO 10273:2017 method for the cultural detection of Yersinia enterocolitica in meat

    • The isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica from food is challenging, because the bacteria are readily overgrown by the concomitant microflora. In addition, thus far, no strictly selective medium for this species is available. The gold standard for cultural detection of Y. enterocolitica in food is described in the EN ISO 10273:2017. It includes a direct plating step that only enables the detection of large numbers of yersiniae.
