    • Vegetables, especially those eaten raw, have been implicated in several foodborne disease outbreaks. Since multiple vegetable matrices and hazards are involved, risk managers have to prioritize those with the greatest impact on public health to design control strategies. In this study, a scientific-based risk ranking of foodborne pathogens transmitted by leafy green vegetables in Argentina was performed.

  3. Impact of sumac, cumin, black pepper and red pepper extracts in the development of foodborne pathogens and formation of biogenic amines

    • The effects of sumac, cumin, black pepper and red pepper diethyl ether extracts on the growth of eight foodborne pathogens (FBP) and their biogenic amine (BA) production were investigated in histidine decarboxylase broth. The antimicrobial effect was determined by the minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (MBC) concentrations. Sumac extract showed the highest antimicrobial activity against FBP.

However, culture may lack sensitivity, and some enteropathogens, such as pathovars of Escherichia coli, may escape routine diagnosis. Our goal was to evaluate the analytical performance of the Novodiag Bacterial GE+ kit for the detection of enteropathogenic bacteria in acute community diarrhea. We included 251 stools in this study (198 retrospective and 53 prospective).

    • The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small, arboreal, nocturnal, gliding mammalian possum belonging to the marsupial infraclass. Exotic marsupials, including sugar gliders, are becoming popular companion pets and, consequently, the risk of potential infections that can be transmitted to humans should be investigated. Data on the role of the sugar glider as a possible carrier of pathogenic and zoonotic bacteria are scarce and fragmentary.
