We will evaluate the virulence and colonization mechanisms of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) in CDCD piglets less than 8 days old.

One litter of pigs will be utilized for each experiment. They will be cesarean derived and placed into germ-free units. At 24 hours old, they will be orally inoculated with a strain of EHEC, wild type or a mutant strain, or a nonpathogenic strain, observed for clinical signs, and necropsied between 1-7 days post-inoculation. Tissues will be collecte for evaluation.
