Objective

WELLANIMAL will developan ethically guided path for surveillance,preparedness, mitigation and response, and explorestructural impediments and existing assetsin different animal domains for effective and equitable resource allocation and riskcommunication strategies to address perceptions, misperceptions, and beliefs regarding animalwelfare, health and care during a biologically induced pandemic. It will identify positions ofshared values and the responsibilities/accountabilities of human beings to animals in a disaster.This level of values clarification, strengthened engagement and enhanced risk communicationopportunities will promote better animal care and enhance trust during a novel pandemic or zoonoses (diseases or infections that can be passed from animals to humans).This project will address the following key objectives:1. Investigate subject expert and layperson concerns and perceptions towards animals anddisease risk assessment during a novel pandemic.2. Explore barriers to communication and sources of misinformation regarding animal healthand welfare during a novel pandemic.3. Lay the groundwork for the development of a collaborative agenda for values-aware practiceand research for animal welfare science and ethics within One Health.
