Research Publications (Food Safety)

This page tracks research articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Recent articles are available ahead of print and searchable by Journal, Article Title, and Category. Research publications are tracked across six categories: Bacterial Pathogens, Chemical Contaminants, Natural Toxins, Parasites, Produce Safety, and Viruses. Articles produced by USDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) and FDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) are also tracked in Scopus.

  1. Hepatitis A virus subtype IB outbreak among MSM in Hungary with a link to a frozen berry source

    • Infection, Genetics and Evolution
    • Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of acquiring hepatitis A virus (HAV) and in recent years several HAV outbreaks mostly affecting MSM have been described. These outbreaks were caused by subtype IA strains circulating in this high-risk population. After years of low incidence, an outbreak among MSM in Hungary caused a significant increase in reported HAV infections in 2022.

  2. Using codon usage analysis to speculate potential animal hosts of hepatitis E virus: An exploratory study

    • Infection, Genetics and Evolution
    • There has been an increase in the reported number of animals worldwide that carry the hepatitis E virus (HEV). This study aimed to explore potential animal hosts for HEV through codon usage analysis.

  3. fIdentification of a novel norovirus species in fox

    • Infection, Genetics and Evolution
    • A novel Norovirus (NoV) was identified by viral metagenomic analysis in fox fecal samples from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. The virus exhibited typical genomic characteristics of NoVs. It was closely related to the canine NoV GVII strains with 86.0–86.2% and 91.9% amino acid identities in the capsid protein VP1 and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), respectively.

  4. Analysis of entire hepatitis B virus genomes reveals reversion of mutations to wild type in natural infection, a 15 year follow-up study

    • Infection, Genetics and Evolution
    • It has been reported that some mutations in the genome of hepatitis B virus (HBV) may predict the outcome of the virus infection. However, evolutionary data derived from long-term longitudinal analysis of entire HBV genomes using next generation sequencing (NGS) remain rare. In this study, serum samples were collected from asymptomatic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers from a long-term prospective cohort.

    • Infection, Genetics and Evolution
    • Author(s): Xiaojing Hong, Liang Xue, Yingyin Liao, Aiwu Wu, Yueting Jiang, Xiaoxia Kou

      Background
Norovirus is a leading cause of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are important host attachment factors in susceptibility to norovirus. In this study, the association of FUT2 gene, which participates in the biosynthesis of HBGAs, with norovirus infection has been investigated.
